SCOPE
This COMBINED NS-1™ specification specifies the minimum quality and inspection requirements applied to
wrought Low Alloy Steel Stuffing Box Equipment.

It applies to:

• Stuffing Box Assemblies

• Stuffing Box Assemblies with hydraulic packing systems
• Grease Injection Control Head Assemblies
• Inhibitor Injection Assemblies
• Non-SOUR service conditions, employing low alloy steel(e.g. 41XX).
• All sizes and Rated Working Pressures of less than 69 MPa (10,000 psi).
• Equipment with Rated Working Pressures of 69 MPa (10,000 psi) and above, should meet the requirements
of NACE MR-01-75 as standard practice. Use NS-1™ Specification NS 03.79.42.1111.
• Rated Working Temperatures, -18°C (0°F) and above.

The matrix of this COMBINED NS-1™ provides a quality template that can be applied to any make and type of
Stuffing Box Assembly. This COMBINED NS-1™ specification in combination with the manufacturer’s parts list
(s) and drawing(s) completes the product quality specification.

When ordering spare parts or sub-assemblies, the applicable quality requirements shall be those specified for
the components supplemented by the relevant requirements called out for the complete assembly.

Design verification, approval and other design related parameters are specifically excluded from this COMBINED
NS-1™ specification.

SUPPLEMENTARY REQUIREMENTS
The following requirements are supplementary to, and shall be applied in conjunction with, the Quality Sub-
Specifications of this NS-1™:

1. WELDING
No fabrication or repair welding shall be performed.

2. MATERIAL TESTING
(Ref. Sub-Spec. 10.1 & Sub-Spec. 10.4)

2.1 Chemical Analysis

Chemical analysis shall be carried out on a heat basis-demonstrating conformance to the
manufacturer’s applicable material specification for all elements contained therein.

2.2 Mechanical Testing

Mechanical testing to ASTM A370 shall, as a minimum, establish yield strength, tensile strength,
elongation and reduction in area on a heat basis, representative of any heat treatment that may have
been applied.

Note: Reduction in area is not required on cast steel materials.

3. IMPACT TESTING
(Ref. Sub-Spec. 150.1)

3.1 The Charpy-V notch energy level shall be 41 joules (30 ft lbs) minimum average of three test
specimens at a test temperature of -18°C (0°F). No individual value shall be less than 34 joules (25 ft
lbs).

3.2 Impact testing shall be carried out on a heat basis as described in API Spec. 16A, latest revision.

4. HYDROSTATIC TESTING
(Ref. Sub-Spec. 100.2)

4.1 Each stuffing box assembly shall be hydrostatically tested to the manufacturer’s procedures and
specifications with the following minimum requirements:
a. The test pressure shall be 2 times rated working pressure for equipment ratings below 69 MPa
(10,000 psi).

b. The pressure holding period shall be not less than 15 minutes. Equipment with hydraulic packing
systems (when applicable): The hydraulic system shall be hydrostatically tested at 1.5 times
R.W.P. of the system, with a holding period of no less than five minutes.

c. There shall be no leakage or reduction in indicated pressure.

d. The timing of the tests shall not start until the test pressure has stabilized, the stuffing box
assembly and its pressure measuring devices have been isolated from the pressure source and all
external body surfaces have been thoroughly dried.
