John J. Johnson President of Farmer’s Bank, Dies at 74

John J. Johnson passed away on Monday night during the first quarter of Riverdale’s High
School basketball game against Geneva, due to a heart attack. He was 74.

John J. Johnson, a resident of 1111 Main St. in Riverdale, and husband to surviving wife
Helen, was the president of Farmer’s Bank in Riverdale and was born and raised in
Riverdale. In 1950, Johnson earned a master’s in business administration (MBA) from
Riverdale University and played basketball for Riverdale University, where he was an all-
conference performer. By using his degree in business administration, Johnson has been an
active member of his community, which is evident from his participation in many
associations and councils in his city Riverdale.

Johnson was a member of the Riverdale School board for 10 years and later joined as a
member of the Riverdale City Council from 1970-1978. In the last two years he spent as a
member of the Riverdale City Council, he was also the State Bankers’ Association president
in 1977. Johnson comes from a family that has always been important to Riverdale as well as
had an active role in the community; his father was a longtime minister of the First
Presbyterian Church of Riverdale.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, at McGrew-Jones Funeral Home 121 Central
Ave. in Riverdale at 11 a.m.. Mr. Johnson will later be laid to rest at the Evergreen Cemetery.
Flowers and donations will be taken and sent to the local heart association.
