John J. Johnson, a Riverdale resident, suddenly dies at 74

John J. Johnson, a respected community member, and committed President of Farmer's


Bank in Riverdale, died suddenly of a heart attack on Monday. He was 74 years old at the time.
John got a heart attack during the first quarter of Riverdale High School's basketball game versus
Geneva on Monday night, a sport he had loved his whole life.

Johnson was born and raised in Riverdale, he lived at 1111 Main St. He demonstrated a
constant commitment to his career as President of Farmer's Bank.

Johnson was highly devoted to public service in addition to his successful financial
career. In 1977, he was elected president of the State Bankers' Association. He also served on the
Riverdale School Board for a decade and was a member of the Riverdale City Council from 1970
to 1978, where he played a role in shaping the city's future.

Johnson’s academic achievements included receiving an MBA from Riverdale University


in 1950. During his period at the institution, he developed as an all-conference performer,
displaying his abilities on the court.

He leaves behind his wife, Helen. Funeral services will be placed on Thursday at 11 a.m.
at the McGrew-Jones Funeral Home, 2121 Central Ave. in Riverdale, followed by burial at
Evergreen Cemetery.

As an alternative to flowers, contributions will be directed to the organization in honor of


John to help others impacted by cardiovascular illness. Johnson will always be remembered as a
dedicated, hardworking man.
