VRIOGS RETIREMENT FAQS

L1-CHE-INF-009 Version: 1 Effective from: 8th June 2018

1. Purpose
This information sheet provides answers to frequently asked questions regarding the Victorian Rail
Industry Operators Group Standards (VRIOGS) Retirement and the rebadge of VRIOGS to MTM
Standards and Specifications.

2. Frequently Asked Questions

2.1 Rebadging VRIOGS

What does rebadging of VRIOGS to MTM Engineering Standards or Specifications mean?

MTM Engineering Standard or Specification has adopted a retired VRIOGS by creation of an MTM
Document Number and front cover to a retired VRIOGS. The technical content of the VRIOGS
remains unchanged in version 1 of the new standard. The document title is generally unchanged
from the retired VRIOGS unless specified.

Why does MTM rebadge selected VRIOGS?

In response to PTV’s Industry Announcement regarding the VRIOGS Retirement from 30th June
2018, MTM has rebadged selected VRIOGS to ensure a smooth, transparent transition from the
retirement of VRIOGS to a full suite of MTM Engineering Standards/Specifications applicable to
Melbourne Metropolitan Rail Network. The technical contents of the rebadged VRIOGS are still
relevant to Melbourne Metropolitan Rail Network.

Are all VRIOGS rebadged as MTM Engineering Standards and Specifications?

No, not all VRIOGS are rebadged as MTM Engineering Standards or Specifications. Of all the
VRIOGS published by PTV, only 91 VRIOGS will be rebadged as MTM Engineering Standards and
Specifications.
Over the years, MTM has been developing Engineering Standards and Specifications that have
already previously superseded VRIOGS. The remaining VRIOGS that have not been superseded
by an MTM document will be rebadged as an MTM Engineering Standard or Specification.

2.2 Finding MTM Technical Documents

After 30th June 2018, how do I know which MTM Standards have replaced the VRIOGS?
Appendix A of PTV’s VRIOGS Retirement Programme Industry Announcement contains a list of
MTM reference document locations, but note this is only current for the Industry Announcement.
Always check the latest L1-CHE-GDL-005 Engineering Standards Listing for Engineering
Standards applicable to MTM network. It is available on Chief Engineer’s Policies and Procedures
page on the Depot or the MTM’s Document Portal.

Where and when will the new MTM Engineering Standards and Specifications, rebadged
from VRIOGS, be available?
From late June 2018, these rebadged VRIOGS will be available on The Depot (for MTM internal
users) and MTM’s Document Portal, which is available externally at
https://documentportal.metrotrains.com.au. Please note the document effective date is from 1st
July 2018.

Where can I find MTM’s Engineering Standards Listing?

The latest L1-CHE-GDL-005 Engineering Standards Listing is available on Chief Engineer’s
Policies and Procedures page on the Depot or the MTM’s Document Portal.

2.3 Using MTM Technical Documents

Do Technical Notes (formerly known as Design Practical Notes) still apply?

Yes. Any clarification described in a Technical Note or Design Practice Note shall take
precedence over the impacted clause or clauses in the associated MTM Standard/Specification,
including the MTM Standard/Specification rebadged from a VRIOG.

My project, which the contract has been signed before 30th June 2018, specifies the use of
VRIOGS. Should I continue to use VRIOGS or use the MTM Engineering Standards
replacement?
Please to contact your project client.

I’m preparing new MTM document, which will be approved and published after 30th June
2018, should I reference the VRIOGS or the new MTM document?
All references to VRIOGS should be replaced with MTM engineering documents for projects
commencing after 30th June 2018.

Some MTM documents, published before 30th June 2018, have references to VRIOGS. Will
these documents be updated with the new MTM document numbers?
When an MTM document is due for a review or amendment and is revised, references to the
current MTM document numbers will be updated.
If you find an MTM document referencing a VRIOGS, please refer to the latest L1-CHE-GDL-005
Engineering Standards Listing for a translation, which is available on Chief Engineer’s Policies and
Procedures page on the Depot or the MTM’s Document Portal.

How should I reference a rebadged VRIOGS that has a MTM document number?
Clauses and sub-clauses of this document should be reference as L1-CHE-STD-025 Clause 5.1,
for example. Referencing the VRIOG document number is not required, for example not
L1-CHE-STD-025 VRIOGS 001 Clause 5.1.

2.4 Technical Document Revisions

Will the rebadged VRIOGS, which become MTM Engineering Standards/Specifications, be

revised in the future?
Yes, all MTM Engineering Standards/Specifications are subjected to periodic review. These
rebadged VRIOGS will eventually be revised. Always check the currency of the document on The
Depot or the MTM’s Document Portal.
