1. What time will give remedial instruction?

2. Does related activities help improve their MPs?
3. What other strategies and techniques to be apply ?

IV. SCOPE AND LIMITATION

The researcher examine the MPs of the grade five pupils of POTENCIANO
A.ABEJERO ELEMENTARY SCHOOL S.Y.2016 -2017.The proponent find some ways and
means to improve the MPs of mathematics V.

Proponent need to analyze what to do in finding solution to the problem..

A. Sampling
The researcher includes all the grade five pupils with low performance in
mathematics in his / her analysis by giving Pre- and Post Test.

B. Data Collection
The primary source of data in this study will be the grade five pupils. This study will
use questioner to gather data from the respondent the causes of low
MPs in mathematics with the use of checklist . and find out later the solution of the
problem after studying the data.

C .Ethical Issues

To come up with the solution with this problem the proponent ask permission to the
Parents and inform that the respondent will be given remedial instruction after
Class hour.

D. Plan for Data Analysis

Based from the data collected from the respondent, result was analyzed through
quantitative method using weighted mean.

VI. WORK PLAN :

Administration of remedial instruction and homework to the respondent start at

second grading period just to improved the low performance of the pupils in

EFFECTIVE STRATEGIES IN TEACHING MATHEMATICS

FOR GRADE TWO LOW PERFORMING PUPILS

ACTION RESEARCH PROPOSAL

I.CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

Mathematics is an important subject being taught at school. It is one of the tool subjects

that are necessary for the pupils to learn in order to build a strong foundation which they can

utilize in their studies and daily lives.

In more specific terms, understanding Mathematics is vital as it helps pupils develop

critical thinking and analytical skills in solving real-life Math problems and situations that they will

encounter in their day to day activities.

With this fact, a strong foundation about the subject is necessary as it will be a great

factor on how pupils can use it in the future. This is also the reason why Mathematics, as a

subject, is given emphasis in the implementation of the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum.

In connection with this, the Department of Education launched various programs and projects

and provided series of seminar workshops and trainings to the field in order for the elementary

teachers to be fully-equipped in teaching the subject but still attaining the required performance

standard is the challenging part.

Based from the school year 2015-2016 Numeracy Posttest Result conducted at the

school by grade level, 60% of the school population (Grade I to VI pupils) were still non-

numerates. This result greatly affects the performance of the school and to the National

Achievement Test for Grade III and VI as well.

Generally speaking, many pupils in the elementary level considered Math as a difficult

subject. Thus, this negative attitude of the pupils toward the subject affects their learning habit.

Therefore, as an elementary Math teacher, it is a challenge to address the problem and

deems it necessary to make an action research that will help determine strategies that will be

useful and effective in making the pupils enjoy and learn Mathematics easily. This study will
focus on the Grade II pupils of Potenciano A. Abejero Elementary School, Cataingan East

District which the proponent currently handles.

The results of this study shall be beneficial for the elementary Math teachers for they will

gain insights on how to teach Mathematics using effective strategies so that pupils’ performance

in the subject will increase.

III.RESEARCH QUESTIONS

The main purpose of this research proposal is to determine the effective strategies

in teaching Mathematics to improve pupils’ performance of grade two pupils of PAAES,

Cataingan East District. Along with this study this research proposal will also examine the

possible causes of pupils’ difficultIies in learning Math. However, for its actualization, the

following questions were proposed.

1.What are the possible causes of pupils’ difficulty in learning Math?

2.What are the effective strategies in teaching Mathematics especially in Grade II pupils?

IV.SCOPE AND LIMITATION

This study in limited only in examining the causes of pupils’ difficulty in learning Math

and to determine the effective strategies in teaching Math to the Grade II pupils of PAAES,

Cataingan East District, that will address the low Mathematics performance achievement. This

will be conducted in school year 2016-2017.

V.METHODOLOGY

A descriptive survey will be used in this study. This survey will be used to collect valid

data in examining the possible causes of pupils’ difficulty in learning Math. In this study, the

information will be collected through survey questionnaires and be answered by the low

performing pupils of grade II in Math. The data collected from the survey questionnaires will

be utilized in planning and designing effective strategies in teaching Math and seek the help of

the research experts.

a.Sampling
The respondents of this study will be taken from the Grade II pupils of PAAES, Cataingan

East District who have low performance in Math or the identified 54 respondents. These are the

pupils who have 74% PL and below.

b.Data Collection

The data needed to this study will be directly collected from the Grade II low performing pupils

of PAAES, Cataingan East District through the use of survey questionnaires. Additional data of

information taken from the books and published articles that will contribute to the study

will be considered and be given due credits.

c.Ethical Issues

The respondent of this study will be properly informed of their participation in the conduct of

this research. The data gathered from the respondents will be strictly confidential and be used

only for the main purpose of this study. The consent of the parents concerned will be asked by

the respondent for the formal conduct of this study.

D.Plan for Data Analysis

Based from the data collected from the survey questionnaires answered by the 54 Grade II

Respondents, causes of pupils’ difficulties will be examined and identified and be given

thorough analysis so that the researcher will be able to plan and formulate effective strategies in

teaching Math. Further study and benchmarking from other Grade II teachers in our district will

be done and be included if found to be effective.
