2.0 PROJECT DETAILS

The project will facilitate an Hospital, Medical college, Girl’s and Boy’s Hostel,
Engineering block, Amenity block etc which will be spread over a plot size of 8 lacks
sq.ft

The entire project will be spread across vast area of 16 lacs sq. ft approximately.

Phase-1 consists of Hospital & Medical college building. These structures are separated
by an expansion joint and Hospital will be constructed first on site. The configuration of
the structure is Basement + Ground floor + 5 upper floors + 1 Floor provision + Terrace
Floor.

The following discussion is regarding the project details like the soil profile, structure
details etc.

2.1 SOIL PROFILE:

Geo-technical investigation was completed by M/s. SHINTRE’S GEOTEC

SOLUTIONS & SERVICES (P) LTD. The field work and laboratory testing for the
Geo-technical investigation and soil report was prepared by M/s. SHINTRES GEOTEC
SOLUTIONS & SERVICES (P) LTD. Report presents results of the Geo-technical
investigation, along with foundation recommendations for the proposed hospital building
and educational building. Seven Boreholes were taken up to depth 15m to determine SBC
for the project.

Recommendation from M/s. Geocon International Pvt. Ltd. has also been taken for scope
of enhancement in SBC values for economical purposes.

Page 5
SVKM’S HOSPITAL AT SHIRPUR, MAHARASHTRA

2.2 GROUND WATER:

As per M/s. SHINTRES GEOTEC SOLUTIONS & SERVICES (P) LTD, No Water
Table is observed up to 15m below ground level. However, they have considered Ground
water table at the G.L for safety purposes since, water table may rise up to Ground level
during spell of heavy rain.

As per Geocon International Pvt. Ltd. Recommendation, maximum groundwater level

for to be taken as 1m below ground level Wherein 147.00M (Contour) level - Being the
Finished Ground level and Existing ground Level will be 146.00M (Contour) level. We
will be considering the same for design of structural elements, this being the latest input,
for the design of structural elements.

2.3 STRUCTURAL SYSTEM:-

The details of the various structural systems considered for this structure are discussed
below:

2.3.1. FOUNDATION:-

M/s. SHINTRES GEOTEC SOLUTIONS & SERVICES (P) LTD has prepared the
Geo technical investigation report for the project. Open foundation was recommended for
the proposed buildings as foundations.

Page 6
SVKM’S HOSPITAL AT SHIRPUR, MAHARASHTRA

As recommended by them, Foundations may be designed for the proposed building up to

3.0m depth with safe bearing capacity of 15 T/m2 to 35 T/m2. Based on above
recommendation open foundation to be adopted for the structure.

However the above capacities were not adequate for the expected loads hence SACPL
recommended to conduct footing load tests so that actual values of SBC could be
determined. Footing load tests were conducted on site for the enhancement values of SBC.

Geocon International Pvt. Ltd. Submitted their recommendations as per Footing load test
results. Below mentioned are their recommendations:

Footing Load Test Location Footing Size Maximum Test Settlement at

Test Number Pressure (t/m2) Maximum Test
Pressure

Near Borehole
BH-6 (at 3m
FLT-1 depth) 1.0m x 1.0m 102 4.38mm

Near Borehole
BH-2 (at 4.5m
FLT-2 depth) 1.0m x 1.0m 102 5.68mm

Based on complete Geo-technical data and results of footing load tests, spread foundations
for all proposed buildings at this site supported at a minimum depth of 3.0m/4.5m below
ground surface can be designed for a maximum net allowable bearing capacity of 65t/m2.

Maximum settlement will not be less than 25mm & modulus of sub-grade reactions 2600
T/m3 can be utilized for foundation design.

2.3.2. SUPER STRUCTURE:-

The proposed project consists of Hospital & Medical college building. For the Hospital
& Medical college Block, there is a single basement level for various services, parking &
linac. It also consists of Ground Floor, followed by five upper floors and One Provisional
floor.

Page 7

3.0 DESIGN LOADS:-

The building is analyzed for the following basic load cases:-

1. Dead Load

2. Live Load

3. Seismic Load

4. Wind Load

5. Temperature and Shrinkage Loads

The brief description of each basic load is as follows.

3.1 DEAD LOAD:-

The dead load comprises of self-weight of the structure and superimposed loading due to
finishes and flooring’s etc. which are permanent in nature. The size of the structural
elements like Columns, shear wall, beams, slab etc. are provided in Etabs, so the
software calculates the self-weight of the elements by multiplying size*density. The
superimposed dead load of partitions, ceiling, flooring and facade etc. are applied as
either area loads to slabs or line loads to beams. The following table defines the
minimum superimposed dead loads that are considered for the various elements.

Super imposed Dead Loads I.S. 875 Part 1. 1987

4.0 DESIGN CRITERIA:-

The design of this structure takes into consideration various parameters that are
important to ensure the structural strength and rigidity. These are as prescribed by the
Indian and International codes and also as per the requirements for this particular
structure considering the specific usage for which it is being constructed. These are
described in detail below:

4.1 DESIGN CONCEPTS:-

All the RCC members will be designed following guide lines of the codes mentioned
above. Care will be taken to ensure that the detailing is simpler to understand and assures
proper ductility and strength. All the stability criteria as envisaged in the clause 20 of IS
456 are taken care in the analysis.

The environmental exposure condition for the structure is taken as “moderate” as per
I.S.456. All the covers to the reinforcement bars are taken as to suit the mentioned
parameters.

4.2 ANALYSIS:-

The retaining wall and all other sub-structure members, if any will be designed based on
the soil parameters specified in the soil report.

The structural glazing system if any will be designed by a specialized agency, but will
ensure that it is designed to resist lateral and vertical loads as per specifications such as
ASTM. The Effect of vertical acceleration and the corresponding load combinations shall
also be taken into consideration.

The structural framing system is taken as building with ductile RC structural walls
with RC SMRFs [IS 1893-2016: Table 9-iv.d]. The detailing of shear-wall will be done
to suit the requirements of ductile detailing as per IS 13920. However the detailing of all
other frame members will be done to suit the requirements of ductile detailing as far as
possible to ensure proper ductility to the other load carrying members.

The lateral loads which are acting on each floor are shared by the members with respect
to the floor diaphragm effects, lateral stiffness etc. Dynamic Analysis has been carried

Page 20
SVKM’S HOSPITAL AT SHIRPUR, MAHARASHTRA

out using Response Spectrum Method. The 3D Frame analysis of the structure gives the
results of various parameters to be checked for the stability and serviceability of the
structure like drift, deflection, torsion effects, soft storey effects etc. The beams are
designed for the critical moments and shears out of various load combinations. Columns
are designed for bi-axial moments resulting from frame moments, slenderness etc.

4.3 ORTHOGONALITY EFFECT:-

All the columns and shear walls are orthogonal to each other in the structures. So the
orthogonality effect is irrelevant.

4.4 LIVE LOAD REDUCTION:-

According to the Indian codes, I.S. 1893 and I.S.875, live load reductions can be
considered in the analysis and design. So this is considered in the analysis and design.

4.5 ANALYSIS SOFTWARE:-

A three dimensional Finite Element Model is prepared for all structures using the
software ETAB. The model incorporates all elements of the lateral and vertical load
resisting system and so effectively captures the distribution of mass and stiffness along
the height of the structures.

Analysis and design of the floor slabs is being done with SAFE and standard spread
sheets. This software has the capacity to perform non-linear cracked section analysis,
which will help us to accurately determine the long term deflection of the flat slabs.

Foundation system is also designed with the same software. All other elements will be
designed using in house spread sheets.

Page 21
SVKM’S HOSPITAL AT SHIRPUR, MAHARASHTRA

4.6 STIFFNESS MODIFIERS:-

In accordance with IS 16700: 2017 for structural analysis, the stiffness modifiers are
taken as mentions in table below. The term Ig is the Gross moment of Inertia of the
section.

Un-factored Loads Factored Loads

Structural
Element Moment of Moment of
Area Area
Inertia Inertia
Slabs 1.0Ig 0.35Ig 1.0Ig 0.25Ig
Beams 1.0Ig 0.7Ig 1.0Ig 0.35Ig
Columns 1.0Ig 0.9Ig 1.0Ig 0.7Ig
Walls 1.0Ig 0.9Ig 1.0Ig 0.7Ig
Note:
1) For slabs M11 = M22 = M12 = 0.25 or 0.35
2) For beams I22 = I33 = 0.35 or 0.7; and J = 0.1 or 0.7
3) For columns I22 = I33 = J = 0.7 or 0.9
4) For walls F11 = F22 = M11 = M22 = M12 = 0.7 or 0.9

Since the lateral force is resisted by the RC shear walls and SMRF, slab is treated as a
gravity member in the design. Therefore, stiffness modifier applied is 0.1.

Page 22
SVKM’S HOSPITAL AT SHIRPUR, MAHARASHTRA

4.7 FIRE RESISTANCE:-

The fire resistance of the buildings has been derived from the NBC 2016. Based on the
usage of structure, this has been classified as “Group C Institutional buildings”. Taking
as Type 2 construction in Fire zone 1, the required Fire rating for these structures are as
follows.

Fire Rating

Item of Construction Details Fire Rating in Hrs.

External Walls Shear walls, columns and beams 2

Walls and columns supporting

more than 1 floor 2
Interior Walls
Supports only one floor 1.5

Supports Roof only 1.5

Floor Construction 1.5

Roof Construction 1.5

Non load bearing Walls 0.5

A minimum fire rating of 2hrs is accounted for the overall design of the structure.

4.8 DURABILITY:-

The concrete durability is affected by the concrete mix and also the exposure condition it
is subjected to. It can be ensured by the proper design of the concrete mix as appropriate
for the Environmental Exposure condition and also by providing sufficient cover to the
outermost face of any reinforcement. The Indian code IS 456:2000 lists out the different
environmental exposure condition and based on it (Table 5) this structure falls into the
Moderate category.

Based on the requirements of the Fire rating and also for the environmental exposure
condition as listed above, the concrete covers are worked out as below. (Also refer Table
16 and 16A - IS 456:2000 ).

Foundations 75mm and 50mm Bottom and side respectively

4.9 SERVICEABILITY LIMITS:-

The limit states of Deflection, Vibration and cracking are studied and discussed in this
section.

4.9.1 DEFLECTION:-

The overall structure and its components tend to have some deflections and or
movements when subjected to lateral loads. This need to be studied and checked against
the allowable tolerances, for which there will not be any problems regarding strength or
perception related issues.

The movements can be caused by gravity and lateral loads, long term creep and
shrinkage effects etc.

The table below gives the global as well as local limits on the deflections, set out by the
Indian standards.

Page 24
SVKM’S HOSPITAL AT SHIRPUR, MAHARASHTRA

Global Displacements

Wind load H/500

Seismic Load H/250

Element Deflections

Vertical loads (Gravity) -Short Term L/350or 2cm

Vertical loads (Gravity) -Long Term L/250

Care has taken to ensure that for all the structural elements, the deflection values are well
within the above limits.

4.9.2 VIBRATIONS:-

Floor vibrations generally make people uneasy and create concerns of structural distress.
The highest vibrations are likely to arise from resonant response due to repeated footfalls
at a frequency that is either the same or a multiple of the natural frequency of the floor.
To provide the necessary vibration control, the structural floor system requires to be
relatively rigid and of sufficient mass to reduce the acceleration.

The Steel Construction Institute (SCI) publication P076 and P354 addresses the above
issue and suggests that the fundamental natural frequency of the floor system shall be
kept at a minimum of 4 Hz to be within the limits prescribed for Vibration and acoustic
control from human movements. The structures are provided with sufficient stiffness to
the floors to cater for the above.

4.9.3 CRACK CONTROL:-

Cracking of the structural members can affect the durability and appearance of the
structure and so all the codes stipulate certain guidelines to limit the crack width,
depending on the environmental conditions they are exposed to or the importance/usage
of the member.

IS 456:2000 restricts the crack width to 0.3mm for the similar environment conditions.
Accordingly, the rebar detailing and designs are adopted to suit this requirement.

5.0 CONSTRUCTION METHODOLOGY:-

The structural design of this project is so selected such that it doesn’t call for any special
construction methodology with or without any specific constraints.

The Foundations and other sub structure elements can be constructed by using any
conventional methods.

The superstructure too doesn’t call for any special construction or shuttering
methodology.
