Marlene Taybridge
My ambition was always to start my own business. I have a degree in art and design and I love making clothes for my
own children. I started my children's clothing business three years ago. First of all, I made lots of different designs and
took them to a country fair. They were very popular and I sold everything really quickly. I couldn't believe it. I realised
that I had a business. I'm not a business person so I went on a local business course and then I got a bank loan to buy
materials and to pay for online advertising.
Josh Wadlow
When I lost my job as a web designer two years ago, I thought it was the end of the world because I couldn’t find
another job. But one day a friend who had a new business asked me for some advice about IT systems and a website to
sell his home-made cheeses. I helped him with his business and web advertising and he was so pleased that he paid me.
He then introduced me to other new start-up companies in the area and, suddenly, I realised that I had my own
business. I don't even have to advertise because people often recommend me.

Gregory Fornbury
Like many other people, my own business only happened because I lost my job. That was four years ago. I had 20 years'
experience in management and training in both small and large companies. I wrote down what my main skills were and
thought about the best way to use them and decided to start my own training company. However, I felt that I needed to
know more about small start-ups so I did a course. Now I do the training for new business and training courses for larger
companies. Luckily, I had enough savings to start the company and didn't have to go to the bank for help.

HOMES OF THE FUTURE

Our homes have changed a lot in the last 50 years and they will probably change a lot more over the next 50 years. In
this article we look at what we think homes of the future will be like. Probably, the most important thing is that they will
use all the newest technologies. These will be better for the environment and save energy.
As populations grow, we will need to put more people in the same space we have today. One way of solving that is to
have walls we can move. These walls will let you use the space in the home in different ways, according to the number
of people in the house and the use for each room. Furniture will become smaller and easier to move around. People
won't use much water because the shower and toilet systems will be better-designed. In addition, scientists will discover
a way of washing with no water! Not everyone will live underground but we may build more homes underground. Some
already exist. Usually, they have the most advanced energy conservation systems, and use solar panels, windows and
smart-home technology. Smart-home technology is technology that controls the lighting, temperature, multi-media,
security, window and door systems. Smart phone apps already exist to control the energy you use in your home. There
will also be robots in future homes. They will be able to do all the boring housework, and they will understand you when
you speak to them. Of course, most of the technology for the future will need electricity. The next question is "Will we
have enough energy to power all these systems in our homes?"

1. Homes are very different now from 50 years ago. True

2. New technology will make homes more comfortable. True
3. It will be possible to change the size of rooms in our homes. Doesn't say
4. We will wash without using any water. True
5. All new homes will have to be underground. False
6. People already use smart-home technology. True
7. We won't use robots very much in our homes. False
