For more than 50 years, Valmont Newmark has been providing quality engineered substation
structures to utility customers around the world. As a market leader in tapered-tubular substations, Val-
mont Newmark specializes in providing the entire package of tapered — tubular structures — from dead-
ends to equipment stands to bus supports.

Valmont Newmark substation structures offer unparalleled advantages.

Lighter and yet stiffer structures. A tube has a higher degree of stiffness per pound
about either major axis than a typical wide flange section, thus eliminates the need of
weak-axis bracing. Torsional rigidity is also greater. A tapered tubular leg offers the
most efficient use of steel by utilizing a smaller cross section where the load is reduced.
For similar loadings, a tapered tubular dead-end can be 50% lighter than other types
of construction.

Space-saving capabilities and foundation reduction. With careful planning, stan-

dard and special equipment arrangement can be mounted on fewer members by employ-
ing tubular shapes. This application reduces foundations, grounding connections,
conduit excavations and surface furnishings.

Less installation time and lower total installed cost. With fewer components and
simplified connection details, Valmont Newmark’s tubular substation structures
significantly decrease erection time and cost. Using a long-lived protective coating, such
as hot-dip galvanizing, tubular structures are easy to maintain.

Aesthetically pleasing. In contrast to the cluttered appearance and complexity of

lattice frames and wide flange structures, Valmont Newmark’s tubular designs can en-
hance your community’s appearance with clean low-profile structures.

Increased dead-end tension capabilities. Our high strength steel line termination
structures allow higher tensions in conductors, while still using less steel than other con-
struction methods. The use of higher tensions may eliminate the need for a
transmission dead-end pole outside the substation and provide additional savings.

Safe and easy maintenance access. The clean, open style of Valmont Newmark’s
engineered substation structures promotes safe working procedures while providing
easy access for regular maintenance.

Quality engineered designs. Each structure is individually engineered to meet your

exact requirements.

Overall, we offer lower installed costs, better structural performance and aesthetically pleasing installations.

Valmont Newmark engineers understand the special requirements of switch supports. Most often, the
structure designs are controlled by the deflection constraints required to ensure proper operation of
the switch and their operating mechanisms. Regardless of the type of switch installed, “V”, vertical
break, side break, load break, fuse or by-pass, Valmont Newmark provides structures to support them.
Valmont Newmark’s tapered-tubular construction and up-to-date analysis methods provide superior
performance and reliability.

translational deflection limits, the deflection at
the top of the “live parts” may be too large,
putting a large, potentially damaging,
mechanical load on the equipment. The use of a
tapered tube allows the designer to precisely
stiffen a structure to provide small deflections at
the “live parts” elevation for a very nominal
increase in structure weight and cost.

The use of tapered tubular equipment stands

can also save money by reducing the number of
foundations required. Three phase bus and
equipment supports can be designed with one or
two legs - depending on voltage and soil
conditions. The single-leg style of stand can be
very effective, and may be applied up to 161 KV;
while, with higher voltages, or in poor soils, a
two-leg style is more economical. Certain switch
arrangements can be accommodated on one
leg; many four-leg wide flange or square tube
switch structures can be reduced to two-leg
designs - with tapered tubes - with obvious
savings in foundations and grounding costs!

All finishes are subject to gradual deterioration. The rate

of deterioration is a function of many variables such as:

• corrosive elements in the atmosphere

• salt spray from road surfaces or a marine environment
• moisture from rainfall or condensation and
accumulation of debris

An on-going maintenance program must include periodic

inspection for normal deterioration of the protective coating,
