ACTIVITY
Scenario: Given the crate system shown, if the crate weighs 1 ton, calculate the forces
generated in the cables.
Assuming that the tension, and, values of a, h and θ are not equal.
Let W be the weight of the crate.

ANALYSIS
Answer the following questions:
1. If we change the diameter of the cables, will it be able to carry a heavier crate?
Changing the diameter of the cables, it will affect the value of the stress it could handle
(tension). Thus, it will be able to carry a heavier crate.
2. If we change the setup of the cables (i.e. change the location of their endpoints) will it
affect the carrying capacity of the system?
It will not affect the carrying capacity of the system. The tension on each cable may
change but it will not exceed to its maximum stress. In an equilibrium state of the
system, the tension has the same magnitude but differs in direction with respect to
weight.
3. What other factors can you find that would affect the carrying capacity of the system?
Enumerate and elaborate your answer.

a. Pulley/s – it reduce/s the tension of the cable by distribution the forces depending
on the number of pulleys used.
b. Number of cables attached to the weight – tension is distributed to each cable.
c. External Forces – external forces affect the carrying capacity of the system. It either
increases or decreases the tension on the cable depending on the force.
EXERCISES
1. The brace and drill bit is used to drill a hole at O. if the drill bit jams when the brace is
subjected to the forces shown, determine the resultant internal loadings acting on
the cross section of the drill bit at A.
2. Determine the resultant internal loadings acting on the cross section through point C
and D. Assume the reactions at the supports A and B are vertical.
APPLICATION
Show similar scenarios (the same with presented activity) and apply newly learned concepts,
specifically:
1. Show internal forces using the cut and expose method.
2. Classify calculated forces based on load types.
Determine the shear force V and bending moment M
in the beam at a section 2m to the right of A.
