Course Description:
Polymer Engineering or Macromolecular Science is the subfield of materials science concerned
with polymers, primarily synthetic polymers such as plastics. The course includes chemistry,
physics, and chemical engineering. Polymer science is the study of the materials of everyday life
and the development of new materials that meet societal and technological needs. Course
structure introduces the students to Polymers that are usually manufactured in the form of fibers,
yarns, flakes and granules.

Learning Objectives: The course is aiming to

1. Definition of a polymer
2. Polymerization reaction
3. Properties of polymers
4. Typical techniques how to process polymers

Learning Outcome

A - Knowledge Outcome:
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to

1. Students will be able to understand the relationships between polymer molecular weight, molecular
weight distribution, and the properties of polymeric materials.
2. Students will demonstrate an ability to distinguish different polymerization reactions and their
mechanisms/kinetics, and learn how actual polymerization is performed in the laboratory. Students will also
be able to analyze polymerization data and predict the conversion and molecular weight, which will lead to
critical thinking about how to improve the setup for better polymerization.
3. Students will improve and expand their skills in performing and analyzing the thermal and mechanical
properties of polymers, and demonstrate an ability to predict how the molecular weight will affect these
properties.
4. Students will be able to determine polymer molecular weights and molecular weight distributions from
different types of experiments. Students will learn about polymer solvent interaction and the effect of the
solvents on the dimensions of the polymers in solution.
5. Students will be able to describe the viscoelastic behavior of polymers with respect to their chemical
structures and molecular weights, and to construct a corresponding master curve from the experimental
data, which can be used to predict the material response at different temperatures, times, and/or
frequencies.
Teaching Methods:

Lectures.
Grading Methods:

Assignment, Quizzes, Lab reports, Mid-term Exam, and Final Exam.

B - Cognitive Skills:
After completion of the semester the student will be able to

1. exhibit appropriate interpersonal skills as demonstrated by effectively working on teams and effectively
communicating in the workplace.
2. will exhibit a professional work ethic including an interest in personal and professional growth.
3. be technically adept in Plastics Engineering Technology as well as supporting math and science
disciplines, allowing these graduates to design and conduct experiments, test, solve problems based on data
from these experiments, design new products, materials and processes, all with a commitment to quality,
timeliness, and continuous improvement.
4. be aware of how their professional role will impact the global community.

C - Interpersonal Skills and Responsibility:

After completion of the semester the student will be able to

1- synthesize different types of polymers.

2- processing methods of each kind of polymeric materials

D - Communication, Information Technology Skills:

After completion of the semester the student will be able to

1- Understand the importance of plastics in everyday life.

2- the relation between the polymer structure and its application industrially and municipally .
