CHAPTER 1 THE EARTH AND THE SOLAR SYSTEM Date: 13.04.2020

Members of Solar System (contd.)

SATELLITES:

Satellites are the companion of planets which rotate and also revolve around the sun along with
their planets.

• They do not have their own heat and light but they reflect the light of the sun

• There are natural satellites as well as manmade artificial satellites for e.g. Moon is the
natural and Aryabhatta was the first artificial satellite of the Earth( launched in 1975).

THE MOON: Earth’s natural satellite

Features:

- Moon is the closest heavenly body to the earth

- It has no atmosphere so it experience extreme temperature condition with very hot days
and very cold nights.

- Due to absence of atmosphere no sound can travel on it

- It takes same time to rotate and revolve i.e. about 28 days therefore, we see only one
side of the moon

- The visible shape of the moon keeps on changing every night and it is called phases of
moon

PHASES OF MOON

• The journey from New Moon to Full Moon, the visible lighted part increases and
so it is called Waxing Phase.

• But the journey from Full Moon to New Moon the visible part decreases and so
it is called Waning Phase.

• The process of Waxing and Waning of the Moon is called Phase of the Moon and
it involves formation of Gibbous, Half and Crescent Moon alternately.
# Full Moon-Purnima and New Moon- Amavasya

 Natural Satellites Artificial Satellites

• These are natural companion of planets These are artificially created by

human beings

• Humans cannot control their effects These are technically controlled

and used as per our need

• They cause tides twice a day They help in communication

• E.g- Moon E.g-Aryabhatta, INSAT, IRS etc.

ASSIGNMENT

 Choose the correct option:

1) Moon causes ………………….on the earth.

a) currents b) waves c) tides d) cyclones

2)What is the time taken by moon to rotate and revolve?

a) 21 days b) 28 days d) 29 days d) 30 days

3) Name India’s first artificial satellite.

 Give short answers:

1) Why moon has extreme temperature?

2) Why moon appears brighter and bigger than the Sun?

 Long answer questions:

1) What are phases of the Moon? Explain the different phases with the help of
a neat labelled diagram.
