Since the question is about construction, let me start with civil engineers involved in
construction:
Civil engineers employed in construction are not limited to site. There are many divisions for
civil engineers. I’d like to mention some.
They design structures in such a way that they can withstand stresses and pressures imposed
through environmental conditions and human use. They ensure buildings and other structures
do not deflect, rotate, vibrate excessively or collapse and that they remain stable and secure
throughout their use.
A planning engineer has a lot of work to do. Preparing schedules, budget, cost and time
overruns details, project tracking and monthly reconciliation of major materials etc.
Here’s the link. Go through the answer to know about planning engineers in simple terms.
A contracts engineer (Not necessarily a civil engineer, it can even be mechanical or electrical
engineer or an architect depending on the scope of the project) has a broad scope. Claims,
settling disputes, correspondences, dealing with sub contractors, documentation and risk
mitigation etc come under this wing.

A quantity survey engineer plays a key role in such large scale projects. Starting with
feasibility studies, cost estimation, capital allowances, quantity requirements, payments and
tracking etc they take care of the project from inception to the end. In addition to this, there’s
a separate wing for tendering and bidding.
A site execution engineer calculates the quantities of materials required to cast the structural
members as per the site plan and executes the same. Engaging Manpower, preparing bar
bending schedule (BBS), studying drawings, preparing progress reports etc are the daily
activities for a site execution engineer.
If you wish to know the roles and responsibilities of site engineer in detail, go through this
link. :
A quality assurance and quality control engineer looks after the strength of materials used
in construction; they test all the materials before incorporating them in works. A person who
makes sure hell lot of specifications are met for all the materials used. There are so many roles
and responsibilities. I will write an answer about it later.
Coming to Mechanical and Electrical, I have limited exposure regarding their duties. I’ll tell
you what I know.
An architect determines what internal and external spaces the client needs, the sizes of these
spaces, their relative locations, and their interconnections. The results of this planning are
shown in floor plans, which also diagram the internal flow, or circulation, of people and
supplies. Major responsibilities of the architect are enhancement of the appearance inside and
outside of the building and keeping adverse environmental impact of the structure to a
minimum. They work in coordination with structural engineers.
However limited, IT engineers are required for supervision and maintenance of software and
hardware required for such large scale project.

Btw, I don’t know if we can test the building as a whole but we can check individual
structural members like columns, beams, slabs etc.
