2. Ext – CROATIAN BORDER – DAY

We see a line of lorries waiting in front of a barrier on a
long road. ROBERT and PAULA are waiting for the lorries to be
inspected and are looking around. They see a middle-aged
border worker who approaches them.

PAVLOVIC
Hello people. How are we doing today?

PAULA
We’re good, just getting a little anxious from this waiting.

PAVLOVIC
Haha! The name’s Pavlovic. This your first time visiting
Croatia?

ROBERT
Nice to meet you. I’m Robert this is Paula and yeah first
time. Don’t suppose you have any words of caution for us.

PAVLOVIC
Words of caution? Let me think.

PAVLOVIC scratches his chin as he looks at the two in front of

him.

PAVLOVIC
Tell you what, let me tell you a story.

PAULA
Please, go ahead.
 PAVLOVIC
I knew a farmer once who every morning would have to send his
mother-in-law into his fields.

ROBERT and PAULA nod gesturing for him to continue

PAVLOVIC
You see he was worried that there were mines buried where his
cows would walk. This man’s cows were his livelihood. The only
thing keeping his children from starving. The farmer
understood that he’d rather lose his mother-in-law than his
cows haha.

ROBERT and PAULA nervously laugh. Neither of them 100% if what

they just heard was true or not

ROBERT
Well Pavlovic was it? Nice meeting you we best be off.

PAVLOVIC
Okay people, nice meeting you.

ROBERT and PAULA begin to walk away

PAULA
It’s kind of sad don’t cha think?

ROBERT
Sad, how do you figure that?

PAULA
He seems so desensitized to it all. Like he’s used to living
like that.
 ROBERT
Yeah, I guess so.

ROBERT and PAULA walk out of shot towards their lorry
