Calculating the pressure drop along the primary chilled water line between the

tie-in supply and return points:

Fitting Equivalent Length (feet)

DN 150 Ball Valve (x8) 7
DN 150 Side-T (x9) 10
DN 150 90° Elbow (x6) 10
DN 150 45° Elbow (x2) 7.9
DN 150 Strainer (x1) 110

Fittings equivalent length = 8*7 + 9*10 + 6*10 + 2*7.9 + 110 = 331.8 feet

Measured pipe run length = 44 m = 144.4 feet

Total equivalent pipe length = 331.8 + 144.4 = 476.2 feet

Flow required = 57 L/s = 903.5 Gpm

Referring to Chart 3 in Part 3: Chapter 3 in Carrier’s System Design Manual:

For 900 Gpm there is a friction loss of 5 ft every 100 ft of equivalent pipe
length PICV pressure
drop is missing.
h = friction loss = 476.2*5/100 = 23.81 feet = 7.26 m

Pressure loss = pressure lost in pipes and fittings + pressure lost in the heat
exchanger

ΔP = (ρ*h*g)pipes & fittings + HXloss = (1000kg/m3 * 7.26m * 9.81m/s2) + 50kPa

ΔP = 121.22 kPa (<150 kPa)

Marafeq's comments:
1.1 PICV pressure drop value is missing on this
submitted calculation. The ETS primary side overall
pressure drop calculation shall include the pressure
drop for PHE, PICV, strainers, isolation valuations and
related pipe works.
1.2 Ensure the overall pressure drop on the ETS
primary side shall not exceed 150 kPa as indicated in
Marafeq's ETS design guide line.
