2 =
x +3 ][
9 −2
4 4 ]
comparing

3x - 3 - 2y = 9 ……….. (1)

x + 3 = 4 ………. (2)

multiplying equation (2) by ‘3’

3x + 9 = 12 …… (3)

adding equation (3) and (1)

3x – 3 – 2y = 9

3x + 9 = 12

__+_____________________

-12 – 2y = -3

-2y = 9
9
y=-

put the value of y in equation (1)

3x – 3 – 2y = 9
9
3x -3 – 2(- ¿=9
2

3x – 3 + 9 = 9

3x + 6 = 9
3x = 9 -6

3x = 3

x=1

Question 4
A company manufacture two different types of call phone F and E , each unit of call phone
S costs (D + 6) OR and each unit of call phone E costs (M + 4) OR. The company insists
that total costs for the two types call phone be 400 OR. Assuming that company
manufactures in total (N+80) products. How many products are of type F and E? (Solve the
problem using Elimination Method)

Solution
Let x be number of F type phone.
Let y be number of E type phone.
Since each F type phone costs (D+6) OR the cost of F type phones = x x (D+6)
Now each E type call phone costs (M+4) OR
The cost of E type phone = y x (M+4)
Total cost of two types of phones=400
Hence we get,
(D+6) x + (M+4) y=400
Total product is N+80
Hence, we get the following system
(D+6) x + (M+4) y=400
x + y = N+80
Now, multiply eq (2) by (D+6)
D+6) x + (D+6) y = (N+80) (D+6)
Then, subtract from equation (1), we get
(D+6) x + (M+4) y = 400
+ (D+6) x + (D+6) y = (N+80) (D+6)
- - -
-( M+4)(D+6) y = -[ (N+80)(D+6)] + 400

-[ MD +6M + 4D + 24 ] y = -ND – 6N -80D – 480 +400

-[ MD +6M + 4D + 24 ] y = -ND – 6N -80D – 80

ND +6 N +80 D+80
y = MD +6 M + 4 D+24

And, now again multiply eq (2) by (M+4),

(M+4) x + (M+4) y = (N+80) (M+4)
Then, subtract from equation (1),
(D+6) x + (M+4) y = 400
+ (M+4) x + (M+4) y = (N+80) (M+4)
- - -
-( M+4)(D+6) y = -[ (N+80)(M+4)] + 400

-[ MD +6M + 4D + 24 ] y = -NM – 4N -80M – 320 +400

-[ MD +6M + 4D + 24 ] y = -NM – 6N -80M – 80

NM +6 N +80 M +80
x = MD+ 6 M + 4 D+24
Finally,
NM +6 N +80 M +80
be number of F type Phone.
MD+ 6 M + 4 D+24

ND +6 N +80 D+80
be number of E type Phone.
MD +6 M + 4 D+24

Question 5
The education of women in Oman in the year 1999 was (30+S) percentages. It was increased
to (75+R) percent in the year 2015. Express the education of women as a linear function of
time.

Solution
Here we must take S and R as an integer,

let R be 8 and S be 4

Education of women in 1999 is (30+4) = 34 and in 2015 is (75+8) = 83

Now let E = At + B …………. (1)

t represents number of years after 1999 say t=0 for 1999 and E represents percentage of
Education,

So, when t=0 then E=34 and similarly, when t=2015 – 1999 i.e. t= 16 then E= 83

put in equation (1),

we have

34 = A (0) + B

B = 34

Also,

E=83 and t=16

83 = A (16) + B

16A + 34 = 83

16A = 83 -34
A = 3.06

Hence, the equation (1) transforms as , E = 3.06t + 34

Question 6
A company produces and sells a product and fixed costs of the company are 8500000 Baisa
and variable cost is RO. (35+K) per unit, and sells the product at RO. (70+M) per unit.

a. Find the total cost function.

b. Find the total revenue function.
c. Find the profit function and determine the profit when 1250 units are sold.
d. How many units must be produced and sold to yield a profit of RO. 20000?
e. How many units must be sold to break even?

Solution
Part (a),

Let the cost function be equal to x, so total cost function

T.C = 8500000 + RO (35 + K) x

Put K=8

= 8500000 + RO (35 +8) x

= 8500000 + (43x) RO

Part (b),

Let the revenue function be equal to x, hence total revenue function

T.R = RO (70 + M) x

Put M=8

= RO (70 + 8) x

= 79x RO

Part (c),

Total profit will be as follows:

P = TR – TC
= RO 79x – (8500000 + 43x RO)

= RO 36x – 8500000

= RO 36 (1250) – 8500000

= RO 45000 – 8500000

= 8455000

Part (d),

P = 20000

20000 = RO 36x - 8500000

20000 + 8500000 = 36x

852000 = 36x

236666 = x

Part (e),

BEP = F. cost / (sale price – unit cost)

8500000 8500000
= = =236111
