Conclusion
In this project, the seismic effects caused by the recent update of Structures Design Manual for
Highways and Railways from 3rd edition to 2013 edition are investigated. To investigate the
effects due to the revision of SDMHR and propose a set of practical design guidelines on the
use of SDMHR 2013 edition, two case studies and a parametric study are conducted.

At this stage, literature review and parametric study have been conducted simultaneously. The
case study of comparison between seismic design methodologies between SDMHR 3rd edition
and 2013 edition has been completed. For literature review, the earthquake in Hong Kong, basic
concepts in structural dynamics and analysis methods provided in both SDMHR editions are
discussed. For the case study, it is identified that the type of connection between bridge deck
and pier significantly affects the seismic loading acting on a pier. In addition, it is recognized
that SDMHR 2013 edition provides more comprehensive analysis method and significantly
higher value of seismic loading estimation.

In the short future, more literature review regarding the response spectrum analysis and flexible
deck model will be conducted to enhance understanding in the application of these two
methods in the second case study. Meanwhile, parametric study is in progress. The rela-
tionship between span length and seismic loading has now been under investigation. The in-
vestigation of other parameters will be conducted afterward.
