CIVL3012 Prestressed Concrete Structures
Tutorial 3: Flexural Design
Key Points of Solution

Take h = 500 mm and use 15.7 mm strands initially stressed to 70% of ultimate tensile strength

Sectional properties
Zt = 0.0335 m3 Zb = 0.0173 m3

Permissible stresses
f ct = 16 N/mm2 f tt = 2.85 N/mm2
f cw = 16.5 N/mm2 f tw = 3.18 N/mm2

(a) Lifting
Stresses at quarter points
fbt = 14.71 N/mm2 < 16 N/mm2
ftt = -1.62 N/mm2 > -2.85 N/mm2
Stresses at mid-span and ends (less critical)
fbt = 13.22 N/mm2 < 16 N/mm2
ftt = -0.85 N/mm2 > -2.85 N/mm2

(b) Working
fbw = -2.91 N/mm2 > -3.18 N/mm2
ftw = 6.78 N/mm2 < 16.5 N/mm2

(c) Flexural strength

M u = 442.0 kNm > M uR = 382.8 kNm (cable force fully developed)
M u = 439.2 kNm > M uR = 382.8 kNm (Table 12.4)
No need for untensioned reinforcement.

Note that alternative solutions are possible.
