Pavement Slab Design for RTG

1 Load Calculation
Dead Load ₌ 0 kN
Live Load/ Wheel Load ₌ 19.5 Tonne
195 kN

2 Expansion Joint Spacing

Assume width of expansion joint gap ₌ 25 mm
Maximum Temperature variation between summer and
₌ o
Winter 35 /C
Thermal Coefficient of Concrete ₌ 1.00E-05

Joint Spacing δ' = 0.5 X Joint Gap ₌ 12.5 mm

Spacing of expansion joint Ls= Ls =

( )

Ls ₌ 35.71 m
Which is less than maximum specified spacing of 140m
Acceptable

3 Contraction Joint Spacing Lc

Lc =
.
Where
2
Sc= Allowable tensile stress in CC during curing 0.8 Kg/ cm
f = Coefficient of friction 1.5
3
W= Unit weight of Cement concrete 2400 Kg/ cm

Lc ₌ 4.44 m
Which is less than the maximum specified spacing 4.5m
Acceptable
Therefore provide contraction joint at every 4.45 m and expansion joint at every 8th such joints i.e. 8 x 4.45
m= 35.6m

4 Pavement Slab Thickness

As per Vizhinjam International Multipurpose Seaport " Manual of specifications and standards"
7.2 Type of Pavement:
RTG runways : Specific strip of land required as RTG crane wheels path and may be separately strengthened depending
on the RTG Crane wheel load specifications
7.3 Method of design
Runways for cranes shall be reinforced concrete beams supported on compacted ground or on piles.
Concrete Beams shall be designed and constructed as per the specifications of IS: 456.

Therefore Pavement slab will be designed as per IS 456 by considering Beam/ Slab resting on ground having size 4.45m
X 2m
Assuming slab thikness ₌ 0.4 m
Self wt /m ₌ 20 kN/m

Factored Total (DL+LL) ₌ 322.5 kN/m 4.45 m

Factored Bending Moment ₌ WT L2/8
Mu ₌ 798.29 kN-m

IS 456:2000
Annex G1.1 ©
MU = 0.36 Xu/d(1-0.42 Xu/d)bd2 fck
For Xu/d= 0.46 and Fck= 25 Mpa
2 m
2
Mu= 0.1336 bd fck
and
d= SQRT( Mu/( 0.1336bfck)) 345.693844 mm
0.34569384 m
Hence adopted section Assumed Section Ok

5 Reinforcement Design in Pavement Slab

Fy 500 MPA
Fck 25 MPA
Limiting Moment
MUl = 0.36 Xu/d(1-0.42 Xu/d)bd2 fck 1068.85 kN-m

Since Mu < Mul, Section needs to be designed for Singally Reinforced

From G1.1 (b)

Ast=( bdfck/2fy)*(1- SQRT(1- 4.598Mu/(bd2fck)))

Ast 5286.960744 mm2

Clause 26.5.1.1 Minimum tension Reinforcement

Ast= 0.85 bd/fy 1360 mm2

Diameter Ast(mm2) No of Bars Spacing
20 314 17.8 112.1236
Hence provide 20mm dia bars, 18 Nos @110mm C/C in Bottom

As Per IS 13920, Clause No:6.2.3

Minimum 50% of longitudinal reinforcement shall be provided at top
Ast at Top 2643.4804 mm2
Diameter Ast(mm2) No of Bars Spacing
16 200.96 13.2 152.042 2813.44
Hence provide 16mm dia bars, 14 Nos @140mm C/C in as Top Bar

6 Design of Shear Stirrup

Factored Total (DL+LL) ₌ 322.5 kN/m

At Support
Vu = Wu xL/2 717.56 kN

Check for Adequacy of section

Nominal shear force τv= Vu/bd 0.90 MPA

τmax ₌ 3.1 Mpa for M25

Hence Size adequate

Design Shear Resistance

% of Reinforcement provided Pt= 0.81
τc ₌ 0.59 MPA < τv=0.9 MPA
Vuc 413000 N
413 kN
Shear resistance of ' Vertical' Stirrups 8φ @150mm C/C, Fe 500grade
No of Leg 6
Asv ₌ 301.8 mm2
Sv ₌ 150 mm
Vus= 0.87fyAsv d/Sv ₌ 306327 N
306.327 kN
Total Shear resistance VuR= Vuc + Vus ₌ 719.33 kN
> Vu=717.56
Hence the section is safe in shear

Check for minimum stirrup requirements

(Sv)max= 2.175fyAsv/b
164.1 mm
Provided Sv= 150mm , Hence Ok
