APPLICATION AND ASSESMENT

In your own words, state what “self” is for each of the following philosophers. After doing so
,how your concept of “self” is compatible with how the conceived of the “self”.
1. Socrates-He is the first philosopher who started questioning what is self and this has been his life
long mission,to know oneself. He believed that our true self is our soul, not the things we typically
associate with making a person who they are (status, material belongings, physical appearance).I
agree with his statement about self that composes of a body and soul, because this two parts is has
a corresponding meaning in truth, that our physical body is the part that is mortal and can be
constantly changing and our soul which he believe to be immortal.
2. Plato-Based on Plato’s statement,he agrees to Socrates that man is composed of body and soul.He
state that the sould has three aspects, the rational soul, the spirited soul, the appetitive soul.
3. Augustine-Based on the explanation of Augustine,he believed that humans were made in the
image and likeness of God and that our rational minds were the image of the Holy Trinity of the
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And I believe to that we have spirit comes from God.
4. Thomas Aquinas-According to him that matter, and form make us a man.And he said that the
soul is the controller of the body,he noted that there is similarity between man and animals based
from their body but the difference is the animal does not have a soul while the man it has a soul
5. Rene Descartes-Based on his statement he pointed that human have body and soul, and he said
that if you doubt you are existing.Yes it is true we all humans should be doubt everytime we are
making decisions so that we can make sure our decisions is correct.
6. David Hume-According to Hume,he defined as human is a bundle of collection of different
perception, so human minds composed of experiences.Yes we can learn on our own experience
7. Immanuel Kant- According to him, we all have an inner and an outer self which together form
our consciousness, and he said that the mind should be first before doing anything because if you
will make a decision or act without using your mind it will be complicated in the end.
8. Gilbert Ryle-According to Gilbert Ryle the self produced by different behaviors.Based on his
statement I agree to that, yes we have a different behaviors that can build up ourselves.
9. Merleau –Ponty- According to Merleau-Ponty that mind and body cannot be separated from
each other.I agree with that because mind and body cannot be separated,If they can be separated
it’s not self
