Classroom Layout

Rationale
• Chose cluster arrangement as I envision students working a lot with each other; I wanted
the desks to be set in a way that would make class transitions much more smoothly from
independent to group activities as I tend to use this method frequently
• I wanted classroom to be a safe place that encourages students to be themselves and
speak their opinions as a big component of my class will be small group and whole
classroom discussion; having smaller groups could make students feel more comfortable
and willing to talk/ enhance communication skills (“Effective Classroom Seating
Arrangements”)
• I made desks vertical to whiteboards and projectors so that no student’s back would be
facing the board
• I put the trashcans on both sides of the back of the class so that it would decrease foot
traffic and be less distracting for whole class if student needed to throw away something;
also made computer carts on both sides in the back of class so that it wouldn’t be as
crowded when students needed to get computers for group work/assignments
• Put bookshelves in the back so students can visit if they need supplies, etc.
• Teacher’s desk is in the front so that I would have clear view of all the students
• Put one group in the middle to space out the groups and prevent it being as crowded for
students as they go to their desks
• Put the whiteboards/projector screen in the front of room so that all students can see
• Even though this is not included in the picture, I would like to include posters on the wall
and possibly a bulletin board, most likely on the right wall behind the student desks
