Q1. Why did the children go to Yasmin Khala’s house?
Ans. The children went to her to know who to pay for the street light. Also they
wanted to know more about the ‘Municipal Corporation’ in detail.
Q2. List four ways in which the work of the Municipal Corporation affects the
life of a city-dweller.
Ans. Four ways are:
a. It provides the facility of water supply without which it’s almost impossible
for the citizens to live a relaxed life.
b. It gives us the facility of electricity, again without which citizens cannot
imagine their life.
c. Collecting garbage is another important function of the Municipal
Corporation.
d. During time of epidemic or pandemic, it keeps the task of spreading
awareness among people.
Q3. Who is a Municipal Councillor?
Ans. He is an elected representative who is chosen by the people of his/her
ward. He is the responsible person to solve the problems of his/her ward.
Q4. What did Gangabai do and why?
Ans. Gangabai gathered a small group of women and went to Councillor’s house
as the garbage from her locality was not cleaned for the past few days. It
was attracting dogs and flies and spreading foul smell all over. People may
get sick, so Gangabai protested in front of the ward Councillor with other
people.
Q5. How does the Municipal Corporation earn the money to do its work?
Ans. Providing and running so many services requires a lot of money. The
Municipal Corporation collects this in the form of tax.
A tax is a sum of money that people pay to the government for the services
the government provides. There are taxes like property tax as well as taxes
for water and other services.

Q1. Why do you think that Gangabai decided to approach the Ward Councillor?
Ans. Ward Councillor is the responsible person to solve the matters related to
his/her ward as he is elected by the people of the ward.
Q2. Where does the garbage that the Municipality collects go?
Ans. The garbage taken by the Municipality is segregated in categories of
plastics, papers, metals etc. It is then taken for recycling in different
concerned fields. There these materials are converted into something
useful.
Q3. Who takes the decisions that affect the entire city?
Ans. Group of ward Councilors also known as ‘Committees’ take big decisions
that affect the whole city.
Q4. What is community protest?
Ans. When the community does not get satisfy with the working or decision of
the government. They rise against it together and protest against it as a
whole. This is known as community protest.
