1. Who was Yasmin Khala?
Ans: Yasmin Khala was friend of Rehana’s mother who had just retired
from the Municipal Corporation.

2. Whose duty is it to replace the streetlights?


Ans: It is the duty of the Municipal Corporation of the city to replace the
streetlights.

3. What is a tax?
Ans: A tax is a sum of money that people pay to the government for the
services offered by them.

4. What types of taxes people have to pay?


Ans: People have to pay property tax on their homes as well as taxes for
water and other services.

5. How can common people keep their streets clean?


Ans: They can do this by keeping dustbin/dustbins at home.
6. What had children done to the streetlight?
Ans: They had broken the streetlight while playing.

III. Short Answers:

1. Why did the children go to Yasmin Khala’s house?


Ans: The children wanted to replace the streetlight, which was broken by
them. Hence, Rehana suggested that the children visit Yasmin Kala’s
house to understand the procedures for getting it replaced. Yasmin Kala
lived in the same lane and had just retired from Municipal Corporation.

2. Who sent children to Yasmin Khala’s house and why?


Ans: Rehana’s mother sent children to Yasmin Khala’s house because
Rehana’s mother thought that she would be the best person to guide them
as she had just got retired from the Municipal Corporation.

3. List four ways in which the work of the Municipal Corporation


affects the life of a city-dweller.
Ans:
 Construction of roads, streetlights, parks, etc.
 Disposal of garbage
 Maintenance of drainage system
 Supply of drinking water and electricity

4. What did Gangabai do and why?


Ans: She was protesting against the Ward councilor due to the lack of
maintenance of streets. The garbage was not being disposed of, and this
was creating a menace in the locality due to dogs, rats, flies, and
mosquitoes.

5. How does the Municipal Corporation earn the money to do its work?
Ans: They usually earn their money by imposing the following taxes.
 Education tax
 Tax on hotels and shops
 Movie tax
 House tax
IV. Long Answers:

1. Write a short note on contract workers who work for Municipal


Corporation.
Ans: These contract workers get paid less and their jobs are
temporary. Collecting garbage is also quite a dangerous job and often
these contract workers do not have any access to safety measures and are
not taken care of, if they are injured while working.

2. What was suggested by Ward Councillor to Gangabai?


Ans: He asked Gangabai to get a petition signed by all of the adults in the
locality saying that garbage was not being collected. He suggested that
taking the local sanitation engineer with them the next day might be a
good idea.
