Vedas are knowledge bank which contain information on various topics like

Ayurveda, literature,Yoga and Jyotish (Astrology ) etc. There are total 4 Vedas and
Astrology(Jyotish) and Ayurveda are also treated as 5th and 6th Veda. In ancient time
our Priests also used to work as Vaidhya ( Village Doctors). There are 30 slokas on
astrology in the Rig-Veda, 44 slokas in Yajur-veda and 162 in Athrav-veda .Our sages
(Rishi) also mention Jyotish in our classics known as Puranas . So we call Indian
astrology as Vedic astrology because it was discovered by our sages (Rishi/Muni).
Our sages declared Bharatvarsha as Karambhoomi where men did get karmaphala.
Karmas(deeds) and Karamaphala (result) is the domain of astrology.

The planetary motions their positions and time (period ) do have affect on us all .
With the regular movement of planets one can foretell the destinies of men, fates of
nations, certain other things like earthquakes, eruptions, floods , rains etc

Indian astrology (sidereal (Nirayan )) is based on fixed zodiac while Western

astrology uses moving zodiac (Tropical ) . In the tropical zodiac, the point in space
when the sun crosses the earth’s equator is the beginning point of the zodiac, or
Aries.

Vedic astrology (Sidereal ) the zodiac is aligned with 27 stars/ fixed star groups. Here
Aries is the first sign of the zodiac , aligns with the first Star(Nakshtra) known Ashwini.
In Tropical (Western ) Zodiac , the point in space when the sun crosses the earth’s
equator is the begging point of the zodiac or Aries.

In Vedic astrology calculation is based on date/time/place of birth of the the native

while Western (Tropical) Astrology uses only date of birth.

Vedic astrology was developed at least 5000 years ago while Western Astrology was
developed in Babylon and Greece some 2000 years ago.

In Western Astrology there is no mention of Dasa system while Vedic astrology uses
many Dasa systems like Vimshotari Dasa/Yogini Dasa /Chara Dasa/Ashtotari Dasa
etc. Western Astrology uses only Transit of planets while Vedic astrology uses both
dasa and transit for prediction purpose. So Vedic astrology is more accurate and
precise result giver.

Vedic astrologers follow a rational procedure based on following five factors

 The Solar System : Our Solar system is centered around the sun. 9 Planets
like Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus , Neptune and Pluto
etc revolve around the sun in elliptical orbit.
Rahu and Ketu are 2 nodes of Moon which we treat as planets. They are not physical
bodies but are mathematically calculated sensitive points of intersection of the
orbits of the Moon and the Sun.

Venus and Mercury orbit in the space between Sun and Earth also know as inner
planets.

Mars, Jupiter and Saturn are called outer planets because they orbits outer side of
the Earth.

Rahu and Ketu always move in the reverse direction, so their motion is always
retrograde.

The Sun and the Moon are never retrograde.

 Zodiac : The Sun’s annual path is know as ecliptic.

 Star of Nakshatras : The entire zodiac has been divided into 27 equal part
parts of 13 degrees 20 minutes. These are also called Lunar Mansions (Queens
of Moon). Each Nakshtra is associated with a planet like Ketu is associated with
star Ashwini .

 Ascendant : Lagna is the point of the zodiacal belt the coincides the position
of the horizon at the time of birth for a given place of birth.The Lagna is
dependent on the rotation of the earth on its axis.

 Janma Rashi : The Sign containing the Moon at the time of birth and this
sign is called Chandra Lagna and it is also treated as important as Lagna .
There are 12 Rashis these are following difference between
these Rashis

its consequences . Very good for making friendship. (Symbol is Ram)

this sign are emotional/sensitive. It’s symbol is fish. These people are not good

Exaltation and Debilitation points of planets

We know planets constantly moves in the zodiac, they pass certain degrees of
Nakshtra’s and Rashis (signs), they acquire or loose power. Debilitation means Neech
Avastha (weakest point) , Exaltation point (maximum strength ).

Exalted Planets give maximum beneficial results and debilitated planets gives
maximum malefic results .

Different Indian Styles of Charts:

South Indian Systle : In this style signs are fixed and rising sign is marked as
Lagna and then proceeded clockwise. This type of style is used in Andhra Pradesh,
Karnataka, Tamilnadu, Kerla etc.
In this chart Aries has been marked as Lagna and counting is done clockwise.

North Indian Style : This style is commonly used in Maharastra, Kashmir,

MadhyaPradesh, Rajashthan, Punjab, Gujrat, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar etc.

Panchanga

Panchanga : It means 5 limbs which are considered for every event or birth of a
native to predict astrologically . There are :

1. Tithi: The lunar day (Moon’s Long-Sun’s Long /12)

planets (Mars, Jupiter, Saturn) when they are 5 sign away from the Sun and ends
when they are nine signs away from the Sun. (Means planets 5,6,7,8 from Sun)
will be in retrograde motion.

respectively not more than 12, 17,11,15, 9 and 17 degrees away on either side
of the Sun, they are said to be combust. They become evil.

UCCHABHILASHI: Any planet which is in a sign preceding its exaltation sign or

1 Pala -> 60 pala/vighati

60 ghatis -> 24 hours

60 Palas -> 24 minutes
1 hour -> 2.5 ghatis

60 seconds -> 1 Minute

60 minutes -> 1 hour
24 hour -> 1 day
7 days -> 1 week
30 days (common)-> 1 calender month
365 days -> 1 year
366 days -> 1 leap year

60 seconds -> ( “)=1 minute

60 Minutes -> (‘)= 1 degree
30 degreees -> ( 0 )= 1 sign/Rashi
12 rashish or 360 degrees -> = Zodiac
