ii. analyzed the purpose of the message;
iii. determined how the message is conveyed; iv. explained intelligently who
the target of the message is;
v. elaborated the other ways of presenting a message.

Lesson I Determining the Message

Lesson Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the student must be able to:
a) determine the message relayed in an infographics;
b) analyze the meaning of infographics using its elements.
Introduction
We often see a lot of signs, posters and visual announcements displayed
everywhere. They are easy and interesting to read because of their unique and
eyecatching design. Yet, they are not just there to entertain the readers. Their primary
purpose is to present facts that are quickly and accurately understood. These are
infograhics.
Key Concepts:
Infographics is the visual form of a text. Information is expressed through visual
and illustrated form so that meanings could be easily deciphered and understood.
Information could be expressed through infographics in the forms of signs, photos,
maps, graphics and charts.

Activity 1. Picture this out! Instruction: Study the picture below. Could you give an
appropriate title for this infographic? What could be its possible purpose?

Purpose: To know and track how people spend their time online.

Activity 2. Take a look at the picture and text below. Answer the questions that follow.

think is the reason why that caution is easier and faster to understand?
For me, it’s the picture caution. It is because there’s a clear picture that
you can easily and faster to understand.

What is Infographics?

Infographics are derived from factual data and statistics and expressed in a
creative manner so that it could be quickly understood by the readers.
In infographics, information is condensed, precise and brief. Large data and
information are segmented into parts that could represent the whole concept of idea.
They are presented in an interesting manner so as to easily capture the attention of the
readers. The content is as important as the design.
Infographics include bar graphs, pie charts, histograms, line charts, tree
diagrams, mind maps, Gantt charts, and network diagrams.
How to Understand Meanings in the Infographics
In order to understand the message being relayed by infographics, readers
should consider its the three main parts in the interpretation of meaning. These parts
are the structure, content and design of the infographics.

1. Structure. Structure is the arrangement of all the elements and how they are
presented. These elements are all connected in one concrete concept. Readers

need to determine how all these elements are organized to comprehend its
meaning.
a. Are the texts arranged in chronological order, cause-effect, similarity
contrast, enumerating a list, etc.?
b. What are the relationships of the texts or data to each other? Do they
compare-contrast, narrate an event, enumerate facts, etc.?
2. Content. Content are constructed out of one certain topic and expressed in
visual form in order to simplify complex ideas. Readers should identify the parts
and how they relate to the whole.
a. What is the topic all about?
b. What are the supporting details and evidences?
3. Design. Design help relay the content or message of the infographics. The
design of infographics connects the elements, relates information, and supports
comprehension.
a. What does the biggest text imply? Do font style and size lend to the
meaning of the text?
b. What do the colors represent?
c. Do the spacing, alignment and white space direct or connect the flow
of idea?

Activity 3. Individual Activity. Look at the infographics carefully and analyze its
structure, content and design. Answer the questions that follow.

For Figure 1, analyze the structure and content of the given infographic.
1. What is the arrangement of the text?
The texts are not that organized but you can still understand it.

2. What is the relationship of the texts to each other?


It enumerates the facts and compare-contrast the text so that it is easily to
comprehend its meaning.

3. What is the main idea/s of this infographic?


It shows how successful people and unsuccessful people differ from each
other. But of course, being successful or unsuccessful does not define
you. As long as you keep going in whatever you do, you’ll achieve more
than you could have the day before.

4. Could you think of a unique and creative title for this infographic? Give one.

The colors that are presented in the figure represents urgent about the
topic which is cancer and also, the colors used represents information
about cancer.

2. Did the pictures help in understanding the meaning of the infographic? How?
Yes, because the pictures that are presented in the infographic are clear
and the picture used can totally catch your attention because it is
connected to the topic.

3. What are the important findings that you have learned from this figure? Cite
three.
1. That CANCER is a Global Killer.
2. 7.4 million deaths worldwide due to cancer.
3. That there are 100 types of cancers.

That we must value and treasure are lives because we don’t know what will
happen to us anytime.

3. As a young adult, what could be your possible actions in order to avoid these
circumstances? Give 2 plans of actions per member.
1. To always be careful in our surroundings especially in road or in highways.
2. Eat healthy foods and exercise regularly so that I will be physically and
mentally fit.
