PERMANENT MAGNETIC DRUM SEPARATORS

INTRODUCTION

Permanent magnetic drum separators are essential in nearly processing

industry and the widely used for the separation of iron contamination
from minerals, chemicals, food, flour, sugar, grains, plastics, sand,
cement, fertilizers, rock, borings and many other gravity or conveyor
transported products.

WORKING PRINCIPLE AND MAGNETIC SYSTEM

ELEKTROMAG permanent magnetic drum consists of a stationary

permanent magnetic assembly around which the drum shell revolves.
The permanent magnet assembly has an uniform and everlasting
magnetic field across the entire drum width. The magnetic field is
effective over approximately half the drum circumference and should be
brought into position before starting. As material, fed evenly, reaches the
drum, the powerful permanent non-electric magnetic field attracts and
holds ferrous particles to the revolving shell. As the revolving shell
carries the material through the stationary magnetic field, the non-
magnetic material falls freely from the shell while ferrous particles are
firmly held until carried beyond a divider and out of the magnetic field.

The permanent magnet used is an everlasting magnet whose strength

does not diminish with time during normal use and can be used
throughout the life of the installation.

SIZE RANGE

The permanent drum separators are available in standard drum diameters

of 300 mm, 400 mm, 500 mm, 650 mm, 800 mm and 1000 mm.

Drum widths range from 300 mm to 2000 mm. Other sizes can be made
as special to your requirement. The larger the diameter and width the
greater is the volume of material which can be handled.

MAGNETIC MATERIALS

ELEKTROMAG offers the option of two different magnetic material

having different magnetic intensity :

FERRITE (CERAMIC) MAGNETS

This LOW INTENSITY DRUM uses ceramic magnets. This is useful for
most of the applications where the iron is in free form or where iron
particles are large. The average magnetic field strength on the magnetic
drum surface would be in the region of 1500 - 2500 Gauss depending on
the drum size.

RARE EARTH MAGNETS

This MEDIUM INTENSITY DRUM uses a special grade of

Neodymium - Iron - Boron (NdFeB) magnets. This is useful for
removing weakly magnetic contamination as well as fine iron particles.
The average field strength on the drum surface would be in the region of
4000 - 5000 Gauss. The rare earth magnetic drum is obviously far more
expensive than the ceramic magnetic drum, but, it offers unmatched
performance in certain difficult applications.

AVAILABLE STYLES

ELEKTROMAG offers permanent magnetic drum machines in various

styles to suit customer convenience :

DRUM

The drum is supplied without the housing

drive or any other accessories. This drum is
however supplied mounted on pedestals and
a V-groove pulley is furnished for driving the

drum shell by link-belt or V-belt.The drum is suitable for installation at

the discharge end of chutes, spouts, screw conveyors, elevators and other
form of carrying medium.

SINGLE DRUM MACHINE

The drum machine is self contained and

consists of a feed hopper with adjustable feed
gate, jig shaker feed tray, the drum itself,
motorized drive for the drum and discharge
chutes for magnetic and non-magnetic
material. All components are mounted on a
sturdy, suitably designed frame work of
heavy section angle iron.

DOUBLE DRUM MACHINE :

The Double Drum Machine is used for

handling large capacities or difficult materials
requiring more than one magnetic treatment.
Double Drum Machines with individual jig
shaker tray, can also be supplied. Triple Drum
Machines can also be supplied if required.

TOTALLY ENCLOSED DUST TIGHT DRUM MACHINE

The equipment comes complete with a

chute type feed hopper, adjustable feed
regulation gate, magnetic drum and
geared motor drive in a ready for use
condition. Inlet and outlet openings are
flanged for ease of connection to
customers duct work. Double or triple
totally enclosed machines can also be
supplied if required by clients.

ADVANTAGES

z No transformer rectifier required.

z No coils to burn-out.
z No electric wiring required for drum.
z No power consumption.
z No operating cost.
z No maintenance.
z No failure - hence no downtime.
z Uniformly powerful.
z Everlasting magnetic power guaranteed.

OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT

A. AN ELECTROMAGNETIC VIBRATING FEEDER can be

supplied instead of the standard jig shaker tray for a smooth,
steplessly controlled, constant feed to the drum. This helps achieve
maximum efficiency in magnetic separation.
B. PERMANENT MAGNETIC CHUTE : When a high degree of
separation is required we recommend the fitting of an elektromag
plate magnet on the face of the standard non-magnetic front
diverting chute. An additional separation can thus be effected in
one pass. The permanent magnetic chute is illustrated in the
picture of the double drum machine (page 3. ) For more technical
information regarding our plate magnets, please ask for our catalog
ED 509.
C. PORTABLE DRUM MACHINES : The drum machine can be
mounted on 4 wheels, at extra cost, to make it portable.
D. ELECTROMAGNETIC DRUM with either aluminium or copper
coils can also be supplied instead of Permanent Magnetic Drum if
required by the customer. The electromagnetic drum will be
supplied with suitable rectifier and other necessary switching and
protective equipment. Electromagnetic drums can be supplied in
standard drum diameters upto 1800 mm and widths upto 2000
mm.

DRUM SELECTION

Proper selection of the correct size and type of an ELEKTROMAG

magnetic drum is dependent on a number of factors.

The following points are of special importance.

ELEKTROMAG DRUM MACHINES Page 5 of 5

Type of material :

z Whether wet, dry or hot.

z Whether free flowing, dusty or cohesive.
z Density of material (t/m3).
z Neutral or chemically reactive.

Average and maximum lump size of material.

Through-put in cubic meters/hour or tonnes per hour. Is material supply

continuous or in batches?

Purpose of iron separation:

a. Protection of machinery before or after crushing ?

b. Removal of occasional impurities.
c. Recovery of iron from fresh or dumped slag of high iron content.
d. Recovery of iron from cold or hot moulding sand or old foundry
sand.
e. Purification of material (food, fodder) from obnoxious or
dangerous ferrous particles.

Type of iron-large parts such as nails, bolts, tools or fine iron fillings
etc. ? - (give maximum dimensions)

Proper reply to the above questions will help us to make a correct

selection. In certain unusual applications customers may be requested to
furnish a small quantity of material to be tested before a recommendation
can be made.

Note : The design and dimensions are subject to alterations without prior notice due
to constant development for better performance.
