DESIGN PROJECT 3/ IDE 1793

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

1.0 INTRODUCTION OF PROJECT

Design Project 3 is one of the subjects that need to be learned for

every graduate of Industrial Design during semester 6. This course had
been practice and exposure during IDE 1742 (Design Project 1) and IDE
1753 (Design Project 2); students are well prepared in the base
technical, skill and understanding to become an Industrial Design
Designer. In order to ignite innovation and creativity, this course student
will learn the element of the future trend in human lifestyle, technology,
business marketing and design thinking process.

For the Design Project 3, the theme of the project is Design Leds
Future which is we had to design a product plus transport either create
something new or manipulate the product that have nowadays for the
future. At the first stage, we are required to create a proposal draft
which is we had to propose early idea for the project that we needed to
do. For the proposal I had to sketch numerous numbers of ideas. After
the ideas have been selected I had to do some research for the idea
that had been chosen and also the some future scenario presentation.
The second stage after the proposal had been choose, I had to do an
ideation which is in this stage I had to sketch 10 ideations. The next
stage is I had to create an idea development which is from the ideation
that had been proceed I had to develop it. I had done 6 idea
development and after that the design development with 4 sketch. The
last step which is the final design and then the mock-up built before
proceed to the 3D modelling that had being done using Catia and

SolidWork. And after that the fabrication process. In this subject, I also
had done the estimation of project costing to know how much the cost
that needed to fabricate the product.
This project gave us opportunity to learn, get experience in the
drawing modification and enhance our knowledge in order to complete
the drawing.

1.1 PROJECT BACKGROUND

A kick scooter, push scooter or scooter is a human-powered land

vehicle with a handlebar, deck and wheels that is propelled by a rider
pushing off the ground. The most common scooters today are made of
aluminium, titanium and steel. Some kick scooters that are made for
younger children have 3 or 4 wheels and are made of plastic or do not
fold. High-performance racing scooters made for adults resemble the
old "penny-farthing".

The kick scooter that I had done for this project is a kick scooter
that designed with the futuristic design and specialised for an adult.
Usually, when we heard the scooter it is synonym with children but for
this design it is specialised for an adult. This kick scooter has the same
function as the existing scooter but I had do some improvement and
specialized by its design and capability.

The kick scooter is the product that had been selected during the
proposal draft. Kick scooter usually formed with a variety of techniques
and materials. During the process and plan to develop it, many
materials that suitable had been chosen. The concept of this product is
a kick scooter that with a modern and futuristic design as the kick
scooter for an adult. The design will be compact but will have good
features and nice appearance.

1.2 PROBLEM AND DESIGN STATEMENT

2 | Page
NDUSTRIAL DESIGN

DESIGN PROJECT 3/ IDE 1793

a) The current kick scooter does not have convenience in size and
design for adult.
b) Kick scooter nowadays also not durable ( not ergonomic and non-
quality material)
c) The current kick scooter was less with adaption of the latest
design/technology and its commercial value.
d) The original product does not have innovation.
e) The design is not attractive and less its aesthetic value.

1.3 PROJECT OBJECTIVE

a) To create a kick scooter that suitable for adult.

b) To propose an improved design of existing kick scooter.
c) To produce a prototype of a kick scooter according to the
industrial design practice.
d) To developed design concepts of kick scooter based on market
analysis.

CHAPTER II
FEASIBILITY STUDIES

2.0 RESEARCH AND METHODOLOGY

In order to gather information about our product, i had chosen two

methods which are primary sources and secondary sources. There is the

3 | Page
NDUSTRIAL DESIGN

DESIGN PROJECT 3/ IDE 1793

difference between of them, which is the primary source method was, I had
done research by interviewing people or person that can be related and know
well about the kick scooter. Besides that, I also had conducted a survey by
spreading the questionnaire that i had prepared to get more feedback from
different types of people and targets. The questionnaire is also given by offline
and also online. I also make a secondary resource method which it was the
different way and source. By using this method, I have gone through the
books, internet, manual user, previous research reports and also journals that
can help for the research.

2.1 PRIMARY SOURCE

For the primary sources, I had conducted an interview with the person
that can be related to the information that needed for our product. The person
that I had interviewing is Nik Nur Hamizah Iffah Binti Nik Yusof.

I also distributed about 177 set of a questionnaire to the people to

answer our questions by two ways which are by giving the manual
questionnaire and also the questionnaire on the online. By distributing the

4 | Page

questionnaire, we will get better information and more of opinions,
information, comments, and suggestions. These have helped in order to
improved and make our project more successful and our products will give
satisfaction to the customers in the future. The 177 respondents not so
specified but some of them also were our target users. By this method, the
data that we get can give more information to us.

2.1.1 INTERVIEW

INTERVIEW 1

We had an interview with Nik Nurhamizah Iffah bt Nik Yusof

Respondent : Nik Nurhamizah Iffah bt Nik yusof

Date : 24 February 2018
Location : UNIVERSITI MALAYSIA KELANTAN

The interview commenced with a her, that has experience in using and
handling kick scooter. The discussion would be about our product, which is the
kick scooter for people to use. The purpose of this interview was to seek

5 | Page
NDUSTRIAL DESIGN

DESIGN PROJECT 3/ IDE 1793

opinion and feedback from her point of view, because they have many
experiences using as a cyclist and using scooter .
From that interview, what can be summarised is now the things and
important items that should have in the scooter when use it. Besides that, she
also told from the experience that she had before is the scooter shall be
designed with safety features and ergonomic to the users. Other than that,
receive positive feedback and comment about the scooter
Design and the scooter design shall consider interest and importance of target
users.

2.1.2 SURVEY

In the primary source, i had done a questionnaire. The reason I did that
because it can save the time. By doing this survey, it’s just takes a few times
for respondent to answer our questions. It is different with an interview session
where we have to find a good time of the respondent to answer our questions.

This survey is also easier where these products need the opinions from
many people, in order for the user to get more efficient use of product.

2.1.3 DEMOGRAPHIC QUESTIONS

Demographic questions cover about the background information of

respondents. This is because we want to make a demographic comparison
between the respondents who take part in the questionnaires. Examples of the
demographic question are such as age, gender and occupation.

2.1.4 PRODUCT QUESTIONS

6 | Page
NDUSTRIAL DESIGN

DESIGN PROJECT 3/ IDE 1793

Product questions cover about the product itself. The product questions
covered: price, colour, interest, and weight. We also have included the
suggestions and new ideas regarding our product.

2.1.5 QUESTIONNAIRE

We have come out with a set of questionnaire and choose 177 people
randomly to answer the questionnaire. This survey took about 3 week to
complete.

2.2 SECONDARY SOURCES

For our secondary sources, I get some information from the internet. I
search some information about our product parts, some kick scooter that have
the same functions and all the things that related to our product. By finding
information from the internet, I have found the suitable design for our product
and how to make or fabricate it.

2.3 PRODUCT DESIGN ANALYSIS

Before starting the design, most of the designer make a research

than analysis it into three parts which is pragmatic, semantic, syntactic

2.3.1 Syntatic Analysis

The syntactic analysis is a research about the cleaning cart,

materials, and disadvanatges. the process of analysing a string of symbols,
either in natural language or in computer languages, conforming to the rules
of a formal grammar

improvement

For the design future I would the to improve in

the term of making shape. besides that I also would
like to improve in term of the detailing so that we
can understand it.

Other than that in term of ergonomic and

material so that I can make it really function.
