I MISS MY BAD HABITS

The text is about a girl who writes an article for the school
magazine at 11 o'clock. She had two weeks to finish it but
the professor wanted it for tomorrow. She was constantly
complaining that she leaves her things to the last minute. A
month ago she made a resolution to be more effective, but
she did not succeed, and she thinks that children all over the
world think of their own resolutions that they make at the
beginning of the school year. She is also trying to lose
weight and went to the gym, she also changed her diet. She
misses her old habits. She discovered that this was not her
fault, it was not anyone's fault, but our brains.
They are programmed to make getting rid of old habits
difficult.
For example, when we sit and play a game, and tomorrow we
have a test, we do not turn off the computer and go to bed,
this is a mistake of the brain. Scientists have done an
experiment in which they found that one part of the brain
thinks about ourself while the other part thinks of other
people. When we think of ourselves in the future, we use the
same part of the brain that is normally used to think of other
people. In other words, our brain sees the future us as
another person, and that’s is why we don’t always find it
easy to make sensible decisions for ourselves in the future.
Scientists have also found that we need about 10 weeks to
form a good habit. But it only takes 10 weeks for the brain to
get used to the new habits, but the body needs more time to
get used to the new daily life. It is good that after 10 weeks it
becomes easier but 10 weeks is a long period of time, so it is
easy to give up. Maybe we want to change but our brains do
not allow it, but anything is possible.
The great fire of London
The text is about big fire in London. On September 2, 1666,
at 1 am, London was sleeping. In the small bakery, Thomas
Farriner and his workers were busy making bread for the
next day, when suddenly a fire broke out. In 4 days
thousands of houses were destroyed. In the bakery, maid
wasn’t tend to the ovens properly. The stoves got very hot
and sparked. The weather was very hot that year. But people
knew winter was coming and stored food and wood in
warehouses. The warehouses were full of wood, wool and
charcoal. Then a strong wind started blowing from the east.
It was a perfect circumstance for a spark to appear. The fire
spread quickly, firstly appearing in a poor area of the city,
where houses were built very close to each other. Most of the
houses were inhabited by several families. People were
panicking, somе people had to break down doors and
windows to get out, the streets were blocked by people and
falling materials. Some of the residents fled the city by boat,
others simply entered the river. At this time the wind
changed direction backwards, the flames were reduced
enough to be controlled. Several people lost their lives, about
thirteen thousand houses, or 80 percent of the building in the
city was destroyed. Thousands of people were left homeless
and lost everything they owned. Fortunately, the houses were
repaired in a few years, but many people left London and
never returned.
