Introduction: Bellard is walking in a suburb and sees a man sitting on a poor-looking porch. The man’s
fate seems terrible and Bellard has a sense of compassion for him, but the man smiles at him. Bellard is
a financier and has married a woman named Lucile that is very hopeful about the future.

Rising Action: When Bellard’s Business Fails.

Falling Action: When Bellard Hears Lucile’s words and feel himself able to confront the situation
energetically.

Characters: Lucile, Bellard, Daughter, and Son

Point Of View: Third Person

Conflict:

Internal: Between Bellard and himself (when he thinks why Lucile is so hopeful and happy).

External: parents and the children (when the children see that their parents don’t seem worried about
the future).
