____ 7. Charles Dickens, considered by many as the most famous novelist of the Victorian Period, was born in
Portsmouth, England on February 7, 1812. Born to the middleclass parents, the twelve-year-old Charles was forced to
quit school and work in a factory that made shoe polish when his family suffered bankruptcy and his father was put in a
debtor’s prison. Eventually, his mother and siblings joined his father in prison while he continued his work in the factory.
At a very tender age, Charles Dickens was already exposed to the harsh and horrific realities of poverty, child labor, and
temporary orphanhood; all of which became his inspiration in writing his novel, Oliver Twist.

____ 8. Poor Law of 1834 dictated that public charity had to be strictly given to the poor only through the workhouses.
Based on a distorted concept of the virtue of hard work, the law states that poverty was caused by laziness. Therefore,
the horrible conditions of the workhouses where residents, especially the children, were forced to do labor, families were
separated, and people were given meager food, would inspire the poor people to work harder. In simpler terms, the idea
of torture is used to “inspire” and “motivate” people to work harder.

____ 9. The beach is the perfect place for me. The air is hot, but the water is cool and fresh. I enjoy swimming and surfing
in the ocean. When I am tired, I come out and lie on the beach. The sand is soft and white. The beach is noisy with
seagulls and children laughing, but it is a pleasant noise. I even like the beach smells. The air smells salty from the sea. I
feel relaxed and peaceful. When I want to relax in summer, I go to the beach.

____ 10. Homework is an important part of the learning process in middle school. One reason is that homework gives
students additional practice of skills covered in class. Middle school classes are too short to teach a new concept and
practice it sufficiently for students to master. Students need both guided practice in class and independent practice at
home. Another reason for homework is that it provides time to complete longer assignments. For example, the ideal
composition process allows time for students to think and to reflect on their ideas, as well as time to revise and to
proofread their writing. Also, reports and special projects often require research that cannot always be done at school. In
addition, since all students do not work at the same speed, giving students time at home to finish work keeps them from
falling behind. Finally, the most important reason for homework is that it ensures review. New material and old material
are practiced in daily assignments. Students who do their homework daily are prepared for tests and make better grades.
In conclusion, not only is homework essential to mastering new skills and maintaining previously learned skills, but it also
guarantees constant review and provides time for longer assignments, as well as additional time for students who need it.
Students, do your daily homework, make better grades, and learn more!

____ 11. There are different advantages of being exposed to theater. Theater is not only an activity meant for those who
only love acting but is also another venue to learn and enrich our minds. Watching theatrical plays enables you to better
understand what it means to be human. Every story you see being performed onstage develops your self-knowledge and
self-expression as it aids you in understanding how your minds work. This will also help you better understand how other
people think, which will improve your relationship with others.

____ 12. I am forty years old, rather tall and I have blue eyes and short black hair. I wear casual clothes as I teach
students in a relaxed atmosphere. I enjoy my job because I get to meet and help so many different people from all over
the world. During my spare time, I like playing tennis which I play at least three times a week. I also love listening to
classical music and I must admit that I spend a lot of money on buying new CDs! I live in a pretty seaside town on the
Italian coast. I enjoy eating great Italian food and laughing with the likable people who live here.

____ 13. “From a child I was fond of reading, and all the little money that came into my hands was ever laid out in books.
Pleased with the Pilgrim’s Progress, my first collection was of John Bunyan’s works in separate little volumes. I afterward

sold them to enable me to buy R. Burton’s Historical Collections; they were small chapmen’s books, and cheap, 40 or 50
in all. My father’s little library consisted chiefly of books in polemic divinity, most of which I read, and have since often
regretted that, at a time when I had such a thirst for knowledge, more proper books had not fallen in my way since it was
now resolved I should not be a clergyman, Plutarch’s Lives there was in which I read abundantly, and I still think that time
spent to great advantage. There was also a book of De Foe’s, called an Essay on projects, and another of Dr. Mather’s,
called Essays to do Good, which perhaps gave me a turn of thinking that had an influence on some of the principal future
events of my life.”

____ 14. While not every young person makes financial mistakes, those who can do face years of difficulty trying to get
their finances back under control. Rather than help them through these hard times when they happen, we should try to
prevent them from happening at all. Making the completion of personal finance coursework a requirement for graduation
would ensure that young people are at least aware of the basics of maintaining a financial stability.
