Expository Texts
An *expository text *is a type of text which provides facts using a clear, non-narrative structure.
Lesson Proper
These types of texts are usually written in paragraphs. It should contain a main idea,
supporting details that explain the main idea, and a concluding paragraph.
Practice (Activity 1)
Expository texts provide factual information about a topic using a clear, non-narrative
organizational structure with a major topic and supporting information.
a. Skimming - this reading technique looks into the overview of the text to identify the main idea
of the text to be read. You may look at the title, the headings and subheadings, and the first
paragraph to get an idea of the text and its structure.
b. Scanning - this reading technique looks into specific information that the reader will need. The
reader may have an idea of what to look for depending on the information they need such as
names, numbers, phrases, etc.
c. Extensive reading - this reading technique allows readers to enjoy reading for pleasure to gain
a deeper understanding of the text.
d. Intensive reading - this reading technique is often used for readers to understand specific
concepts and information.
e. Speed reading - this reading technique is often a combination of reading strategies that aims to
get as much information as possible in a given time. This involves looking into key sentences
and words which will help readers easily get information about the text.
The first and last lines of the paragraph usually contain the summary or the general idea to be
discussed in the whole text. These lines would also give an idea on how the details are connected
with one another.
Since a text is organized in a coherent manner, it follows a particular format. The first paragraph
contains the main idea of the entire paragraph and the last paragraph gives the conclusion and
generalization of the entire text.
Some texts would have subheadings that contain ideas that are connected with the main idea.
These ideas will give the reader a chance to formulate particular ideas or questions which you
can explore as you go into the details of the text later on.
