Expository Texts

An *expository text *is a type of text which provides facts using a clear, non-narrative structure.

Characteristics of Expository Texts

Expository texts should have the following characteristics:

 Expository texts should provide information about a particular topic.

 These types of texts are usually written in paragraphs. It should contain a main idea,
supporting details that explain the main idea, and a concluding paragraph.

 Information presented in an expository text should be organized in a clear text structure.

 Language used in expository texts is domain-specific in terms of vocabulary to precisely


explain the topic.

Expository texts provide factual information about a topic using a clear, non-narrative
organizational structure with a major topic and supporting information.

Common Reading Techniques

a. Skimming - this reading technique looks into the overview of the text to identify the main idea
of the text to be read. You may look at the title, the headings and subheadings, and the first
paragraph to get an idea of the text and its structure.

b. Scanning - this reading technique looks into specific information that the reader will need. The
reader may have an idea of what to look for depending on the information they need such as
names, numbers, phrases, etc.

c. Extensive reading - this reading technique allows readers to enjoy reading for pleasure to gain
a deeper understanding of the text.

d. Intensive reading - this reading technique is often used for readers to understand specific
concepts and information.
e. Speed reading - this reading technique is often a combination of reading strategies that aims to
get as much information as possible in a given time. This involves looking into key sentences
and words which will help readers easily get information about the text.

Strategies in Reading Expository Texts

Scan for logical connectors to determine text structure.

Skim to determine key ideas and the author’s purpose.

 Reading the first and last lines of the paragraph

The first and last lines of the paragraph usually contain the summary or the general idea to be
discussed in the whole text. These lines would also give an idea on how the details are connected
with one another.

 Reading the first and last paragraph

Since a text is organized in a coherent manner, it follows a particular format. The first paragraph
contains the main idea of the entire paragraph and the last paragraph gives the conclusion and
generalization of the entire text.

 Reading the section headings

Some texts would have subheadings that contain ideas that are connected with the main idea.
These ideas will give the reader a chance to formulate particular ideas or questions which you
can explore as you go into the details of the text later on.
 Reading strategies for Expository Texts:

Graphic Organizers

Graphic organizers are tools that use visual symbols to express knowledge, concepts, thoughts, or ideas
and the relationships between them.

Objectives:

At the end of the lesson, you should be able to

present ideas using a variety of graphic organizers; and

organize ideas in one-step word, phrase, and sentence outline forms.

Graphic organizers are tools that use visual symbols to express knowledge, concepts,
thoughts, or ideas and the relationships between them.

A graphic organizer is a visual and graphic display that depicts the relationships between
facts, terms, and or ideas within a learning task. Graphic organizers are also sometimes referred
to as knowledge maps, concept maps, story maps, cognitive organizers, advance organizers, or
concept diagrams.

An *outline *is a formal system used to organize notes or ideas

Topic outline *- outline which consists of short phrases

*Sentence outline - outline which consists of full sentences
