Graduating from high school is important for many different
reasons
Why is high school so important? We can hear a lot of frustrated students asking this
question. Many of them are even thinking of dropping out. However, acquiring a high school
diploma is much more important and useful than they realize. Although I think we all can
agree that education could be a lot more practical, being in high school improves several skills
that are useful in real life such as note taking, listening, concentration, time management or
information processing. High school prepares us for our further education especially for
college or university. We spend the most important stages of adolescence in secondary school,
which we should not waste by growing up too quickly. Going to high school helps us to learn
about the world by giving us literacy and perspective. It gives us a chance to grow mentally,
emotionally and physically. Without a high school diploma we cannot go to university or
college, though for several professions we must. In general, high school graduates have more
opportunities and better salary as most of the jobs today that pay more than the minimum
wage require at least a high school diploma. The unemployment rate is lower among high
school graduates than it is among dropouts. Those who have graduated from secondary school
are less likely to commit crimes. All things considered, every students should take advantage
of their years spent in secondary education. It may be hard, but it is worth it.

Journal
I chose this topic because I found it very interesting and it got me thinking a lot. It is a very
common issue nowadays as I hear a lot of people debating about whether education
(especially secondary education) is useful, whether it prepares us for the ‘real life’. Most of
them say that it is not important at all and it does not help us in our future lives. I do not agree
with them, or at least not completely. In this essay I have written my opinion. Before writing
it, I did a bit of research about the subject; I read a couple of articles and different opinions
about it. I gathered my thoughts and made an outline, then I wrote the first version of the
essay which I revised and collected. All in all, it took me about one and a half or two hours to
write this essay.
