Exercise 2 11:June 2020

1. A public garden in Canada has a computerised

greenhouse to grow rare plants.

(a) Name three sensors which would be used in a

computerised greenhouse [3]

1. Temperature sensor

2. Light sensor

3. PH value sensor

(b) To maintain the environment the sprinkler system sprays water

on the plants for four hours each day.

Describe how a microprocessor uses the data from a timer to control

the sprinklers in the computerised greenhouse. [6]

Data from humidity sensor sensor in taken to an Analogue Digital Converter which

send a signal to the Microprocessor

The microprocessor will compare the imputed water value with the stored value

and decides what action at the sprinklers and valves should be taken.

If the Humidity is greater or lesser in the stored value then the microprocessor will

send signal to the Digital Analogue Converter to operate the valves and sprinklers

either spray for the fours hours or stop for the remaining hours...

2. State two benefits to a company of using robots on car

production lines. [2]

-. Robots have got a higher productivity

- Robots can work non stop without breaks or holidays or shifts

3. Expert systems are used to diagnose illness in patients.

Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using an expert

system to diagnose illness. [8]

Advantages

* They provide consistent results making it easier for the doctor to match

symptoms to a probable cause

* They have got a high amount of information in memory than of the doctor for it

can save time for diagnosis

* When giving diagnosis to the the patient they will quickly recommend what

action the doctor should take take take e.g correct medicine

* It quickly show diagnosis suggestions based on information on data base

reducing the the doctor's time to help the patient

Disadvantages

* It can result to death or great infections if there are problems in the knowledge

base

* It lacks human touch which affect emotional reasoning and that could affect the

patient too

* Patients may have difficulties and doubts to diagnose and prescriptions made by

a system

* wrong decision making by the expert system could result to harm of that

particular patient

4. Many ATMs now allow customers to deposit cash and

cheques.
(a) Describe the inputs and processing involved in depositing

a cheque using an ATM. [6]

- First insert your debit card into the machine

- type in your pin number when prompted

- choose Deposit from the menu options

- endorse your cheque by signing the back with your signature

- if the AT requires an envelope, then fill out a deposit slip and put it in the

envelope with your check

(b) Discuss the benefits and drawbacks, to the customer, of

using ATMs to deposit cheques into a bank account. [6]

Benefits

- it's possible to deposit multiple checks into an account

- if you need an instant cash and you have no money in your account already, it's

possible that can get some cash immediately after depositing

-It is convenient as one could transact at any possible time

- it is more secure method than cash where by if an ATM card is reported stolen,

the thief won't be to withdraw the cash

- it's a faster method and process of payment or deposit

Drawbacks
-Deposits are sometimes limited ft some security reasons

-An ATM can get robbed and customers loose their money and making it difficult

to verify their lost sums in the envelopes

- There's risk to fraud as customers could key in large amounts than they are

depositing

- There's risk of planted devices which captures data stored from your card
