THE PRIMARY SECTOR


Provides jobs which obtain resources from nature. These resources are used to
manufacture products. Primary sector activities are:

In Spain
Agricultural activities include: Grains, olives, potatoes and fruit.
Cereals, grapes and olives are the most abundant dry crops. Fruits and vegetables
are the most abundant irrigated crops.
Farming includes: sheep, pigs, cattle and poultry. Pigs are the most abundant livestock
in Spain followed by cattle.
Fishing is coastal. Galicia and Andalucia are the provinces with most fishermen.

THE SECONDARY SECTOR

Jobs which transform natural resources into manufactured products:

Primary industries transform raw material into other products. The most
important primary industries are metallurgical and chemical. One example of
metallurgical industry is the one that transforms iron into steel.

Equipment and machinery industries produce tools needed for other industries:
for example robots. Machines, cars or ships are included here as well.

Consumer industries produce products to sell to consumers. Examples of these


industries are food, textiles or furniture.

Construction industry makes buildings, bridges, houses, roads and motorways.

The most important industries are: metal, automobiles, food, and chemicals.

THE TERTIARY SECTOR
It includes activities which provide services:
Trade is the buying and selling of products. It can be domestic (inside the
country) or foreign (with other countries).
Transport is necessary so that the products can get to the shops and the
consumers. Products can be transported by land, sea or air.
Tourism is related to the travelling to other places for fun or cultural reasons.
There are different types of tourism:
• Sun and sand (beaches)
• Rural (countryside)
• Cultural (museums, theatres and monuments)

In Spain
Tourism is one of the most important tertiary activities. Spain receives lots of
tourists attracted by its Mediterranean climate, beaches, and main cities as
Madrid, Barcelona or Seville.
