Punctuation

*modifications for online instruction in bold*

Your Name: Camille Mazloomian

Grade Level: Kindergarten
Objective: Students will be able to accurately identify which punctuation belongs at the end of a sentence.
Standards: L.K.2 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and
spelling when writing.
Procedures: Whole Group Instruction, and individual work time
Opening: (Whole group) on a pre-recorded video: I will show students two videos explaining different parts of a
sentence as a hook to the lesson. Punctuation Explained(https://safeyoutube.net/w/1LY1) and The Punctuation Song
(https://safeyoutube.net/w/SMY1) I will review the components of a sentence with the students. I will let the students
know we are going to focus on punctuation today. I will state the learning objective for the lesson, have them repeat it,
and display it on the board. “I can use proper punctuation” I will review the three types of ending punctuation that we are
already familiar with and ask students to repeat after me. I will give students multiple examples of using correct
punctuation at the end of sentences. I will explain independent work directions to students and dismiss them to start
working on their Seesaw Activity.
Body: Individual (Parental Guidance): Students will be working on individual assignments through the Seesaw
application on their iPads. To emphasize punctuation, they will then highlight periods in blue, exclamation points in red,
and question marks in green.
Closing: Through a live Zoom meeting, I will start by asking students what they have learned in the lesson today. I will
write a sentence with missing punctuation on the board. I will ask students what is missing from the end of the sentence. I
will also ask students what is always necessary at the beginning of a sentence to gauge understanding for the next lesson
using a capital at the beginning of each sentence.

Adaptations:
- Students who need more support are provided with manipulatives, video recording of lessons which they can
pause and replay, and simple sentences. Highlighting punctuation will help them be aware of and learn the use
of each type of punctuation
- For more advanced learners, I will increase the number of, and complexity of sentences given in Seesaw
activities. I will also challenge these students to create their own sentences using either a period, question mark,
or exclamation point.

Assessment: I can informally assess students through the live Zoom meeting.
I can formally assess student understanding by evaluating their completed Seesaw activities.
Small group Activity: Below Grade Level
Small group Activity: At Grade Level

Small group Activity: Above Grade Level
