Sensors
Introduction:
Sensors:
Element which takes information about the variable being measured or monitored
and changes it into some form which enables the rest of the system to utilize it.

Here we will deal with the sensors that are commonly used with Pneumatics and
Hydraulic systems for position sensing.
Sensors
Position Sensors can be grouped into two basic types:

a) Contact Sensors: The object at its position comes in contact with the sensor

b) Non-contact Sensors: There is no contact between the object and the sensor, the
term proximity sensor often being used.
Sensors
Mechanical Contact Sensors:
 Widely used for position sensing.
 Common forms involving roller and plunger valves.
 The object being detected impinges on the end of the roller or plunger so switching
the valve from one position to another.

Non-Contact Pneumatic Sensor:
 Gap Sensor

Non-Contact Pneumatic Sensor:
 Air Barrier Sensor

Amplifiers:

 Pneumatic sensors give a low pressure signal which needs amplification.

Electrical Switches:
Electrical switches are the form of sensor in which the activation of the sensor
produces an electrical current.

Mechanical form:
Specified in terms of:
 Number of poles: this being number of separate circuits that can be switched
simultaneously.
 Number of ways: this being the number of positions to which each pole may be
switched.
