What is a Hazard?
When we refer to hazards in relation to occupational safety and health the
most commonly used definition is ‘A Hazard is a potential source of harm
or adverse health effect on a person or persons.

A hazard is an agent which has the potential to cause harm to a vulnerable

target. Hazards can be both natural or human induced. Sometimes natural
hazards such as floods and drought can be caused by human activity.
Floods can be caused by bad drainage facilities and\ droughts can be
caused by over-irrigation or groundwater pollution.

Types of hazards:
There are six types of hazards which are as follow:
1. Biological
2. Chemical
3. Ergonomic
4. Physical
5. Psychological
6. Safety

Hazards in My Room:
The Room is meant to be where you and your family are safe and
secure but each year, incidents and ambulance departments deal
with serious injuries and even fatal accidents that occur in the
room. It is not just children and the elderly who can end up
damaging items like chemicals and choking hazards in the
household. Home say injuries take 12,000 lives in Pakistan alone
each year.

Identification:
Many hazards could be found in any person’s room butt specially
in my room there are numbers of hazard in my room such as:

1. Laptop Battery overcharge

2. Fall of ceiling fan

3. Electric shock form extension

4. Explode of Lamp
5. Floor being Earthed

Assessment:
❖ Laptop Battery overcharge:
• Overheating the battery and device can lead to battery failure
and increase the risks of fire or explosion. Cold temperatures
can cause device failure. The risk of fire or explosion cause
human physical damage. Fire can also harm person body.
❖ Fall of ceiling fan:

Fall of ceiling fan hazards can include lacerations, abrasions and

skull fractures. These injuries are most commonly sustained to
the scalp, chin, face, forehead and temple.

Fall of ceiling fan Injuries at home can occur when:

• children climb in or out of bunk beds that are placed too

close to a ceiling fan
• an adult lifts a child up into a ceiling fan
• children jump from a piece of furniture in the room.

❖ Electric shock form extension:

Due to over voltage extension could be explode. Due to
appearance of water in extension could lead short circuit. Short
circuit can cause serious injuries and death.

❖ Explode of Lamp:
Light bulbs most commonly explode when manufacturers don't
put enough insulation on the base of the bulb, which causes the
base to melt and allows the gas stored in the light bulb to leak
out. The leaking gas causes a difference in pressure which causes
the light bulb to explode.

Also, a light bulb may explode for a variety of other reasons,

including faulty fabrication or wiring. If there is no quality seal
on an incandescent bulb, condensation can get inside and
cause an explosion

❖ Floor being Earthed:

Earth is the reference point in an electrical circuit from which

voltages are measured, a common return path for electric
current, or a direct physical connection to the earth.

Electrical circuits may be connected to ground (earth) for several

reasons. Exposed metal parts of electrical equipment are
connected to ground, so that failures of internal insulation will
trigger protective mechanisms such as fuses or circuit breakers
in the circuit to remove power from the device.

Mitigation:
❖ Laptop Battery overcharge:
The only answer for the prevention of laptop battery explosion is
proper maintenance. People tend to neglect batteries as they
tend to look simple parts and that they carry pretty safe measure
of voltage. But since their design is complicated, simple
negligence can trigger off an explosion.

❖ Fall of ceiling fan:

• By checking the nuts and bolds of fan after every month
• By checking the roof of room

❖ Electric shock form extension:

• Keep the Appliances Away from Moisture and Water
• Never Connect or Disconnect Under Load
• Install GFCI Outlets

• Fix Extension Cord Problems

❖ Explode of Bulb:
• Do not screw bulb in too tight.
• Use better light bulbs.
• Reduce the heat around the light fixture.
• Reduce the amount of vibrations around the light fixture or
use a 130-volt light bulb
❖ Floor being Earthed:
• Another way to lower earth resistivity is to treat the soil with
a salt, such as copper sulfate, magnesium sulfate, or sodium
chloride. Combined with moisture, the salts leach into the
soil to reduce earth resistivity.
