What are the four quadrants/types of data visualization?

The four types of Data Visualization are Idea Illustration, Idea Generation, Visual Discovery, and
Everyday DataViz.

What are the primary goals of each quadrant and what type(s) of data visualization is more
relevant to data scientists in your view?

1. Idea Illustration- This quadrant is also called the Consultants’ Corner. It clarifies complex
ideas by drawing in our ability to understand metaphors and simple design conventions.
Ex- org charts and decision trees. This consists of clear and simple designs and focuses
on clear communication, structure, and logic of ideas. Editing is the main skill here. The
main goal is learning, simplifying, and explaining.
2. Idea Generation- This quadrant relies on conceptual metaphors but takes place in
informal settings such as off-sites, strategy sessions, and early-phase innovation
projects. It deals with finding new ways of finding how business works and finding
solutions to complex managerial challenges. It is mostly benefitted if it has collaborated
with design thinking. Managers here promote brainstorming sessions and encourage
creative thinking. The main goal is to solve a problem, discover, and innovate.
3. Visual Discovery- This quadrant is the most complicated one. The scope of data tends to
be a manageable one. Work has to be done to find the charts needed for the
presentation. Here there is a shift from design to prototyping. Parameters can be
adjusted and continually visualized. Managers call for experts' help and here mostly
analytical skills, data management, and business intelligence skills play an important
role. The main goal here is trend spotting, sense-making, and deep analysis.
4. Everyday Dataviz: This quadrant is composed of basic charts and graphs- usually deals
with simple charts, namely- line, bar, pie, and scatter plots. Simplicity lies in the design
and clarity and consistency is the key and used in a formal presentation. Generally, in a
presentation, time is a major factor and a constraint. A poorly designed chart will waste
time as everyday DataViz will not be able to speak for itself. We need a pictorial
representation that would speak for itself and have maximum clarity. The main goal is
affirming and setting the context.
According to me, Visual discovery is more relevant to data scientists as this needs a deep
analysis.
