Corals

Corals are tiny, individual marine animal organisms

called polyps.

Corals depend on minute, brightly colored single-celled plants called zooxan-

thellae. These live within the coral tissue and use energy from the sun to pho-
Mutualism tosynthesise and make food for themselves and the coral polyps. They also
give the corals their amazing colours. In,return, the coral provides nutrients
such as nitrogen for the algae. The symbiotic relationship between corals
and zooxanthellae is mutualism because both organisms benefit from it.

Effects of Humans Activities to Coral Reefs

Overfishing is when people take more fish from the ocean than what
the ocean can produce. Fishes that are caught too young by humans

cannot regrow and reproduce so that it can contribute to the fish pop-
ulation. Thus, fewer fishes are available to provide food for other ma-
rine organisms. Some fish eat algae and where there are less of these
fish ,algae grows too thick and smothers the reef.
Overfishing

Due to activities like deforestation and burning of fossil fuels, cause ocean
Climate Change temperature to river change storm patterns, and contribute to sea levels rise.
This leads to Coral Bleaching. Coral Bleaching will lead to the expulsion and
death of zooxanthellae. When zooxanthellae are expelled from the coral tis-
sue, the corals appear bleach. Thus they are unable to produce the mucus
needed to clean themselves. When seas become warmer, the risk of coral
bleaching increases. Corals may die because of the result of coral bleaching.
