Understanding Your GorillaBac

As the operator of the GorillaBac, you are responsible for your personal safety and the safety of
others. Read and understand this GorillaBac owner’s manual, as well as your log splitter
owner’s manual, which include valuable information about all aspects of the machinery.
Do not operate this tool if you have any doubts or questions concerning safe operations. Please
contact our Customer Care Representative at 260-249-9420 to resolve these concerns or visit
the GorillaBac website at www.gorillabac.com.

GorillaBac is capable of meeting every operator’s need for pulling firewood-size logs (to a
maximum of 250 pounds) to a log splitter, lifting the log, and positioning it onto the splitter
beam. GorillaBac is designed for this use ONLY.
As the operator, you have the responsibility to assure this device is used only to pull, lift and
position firewood size logs that you are capable of handling without the GorillaBac, up to the
maximum size log denoted in your splitter’s owner’s manual. Any other use can result in
equipment damage or cause serious injury or death.
• GorillaBac is powered with a 12-volt electric winch and requires a portable
power source, such as a lawn & garden or trolling battery (not included).
• The GorillaBac adjustable Stabilizer Foot enables stability during operation.
• GorillaBac utilizes a Pulley Block, Hook and Chain to enable the pulling of
firewood logs while maintaining its structural strength and stability.
• The GorillaBac Grip tool is the positive penetration and log holding device
used to attach the winch cable hook to the log. It screws into the center-
round side of the firewood log.
• The Winch Cable Safety Hook attaches to the GorillaBac Grip tool for pulling,
lifting, and setting the log on splitter beam.
• The hard-wired handheld Winch Control Switch provides push-button control
for spooling the winch cable cable in and out under tension. Free spool out
• The Boom Control Arm allows the operator to maintain a safe distance from
the log while it is being lifted, suspended, and positioned on the log splitter I-
beam.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE GEAR
It is critical to wear appropriate safety gear while operating GorillaBac in conjunction with a log
splitter: goggles or safety glasses, hearing protection, close fitted long-sleeved shirt or jacket, hair
restraint, long pants, steel-toed boots and heavy leather gloves.
Long hair must be kept under a cap, net or helmet and kept clear of GorillaBac and the log splitter at
all times.

GENERAL SAFETY
ALWAYS keep this operator’s manual nearby for reference. Re-read this manual periodically.
ALWAYS ensure all operators are properly trained and have read and understood this manual.
ALWAYS install and operate GorillaBac free of the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medication.
ALWAYS wear close-fitted clothing, free from lanyards, strings or jewelry which could be an
entrapment hazard.
ALWAYS keep clothing and hair contained and away from moving parts.
ALWAYS wear proper footwear with adequate traction.
ALWAYS be aware of the location of the GorillaBac Boom to avoid contact with your head.
ALWAYS establish a safety zone restricting bystanders and pets to a 15-foot radius around GorillaBac
when operating. Only the operator is to be properly positioned near GorillaBac during use.

WORKSITE SETUP TO AVOID LIFT DAMAGE AND TIP -OVER

ALWAYS operate your log splitter and GorillaBac on firm, level earth. Operating on a slope or
unstable ground could cause machinery to shift or tip over.
ALWAYS operate GorillaBac in daylight.
ALWAYS keep your work area clean. Remove split wood away from the work area immediately to
avoid stumbling hazards.
ALWAYS set up the GorillaBac with the Stabilizer Foot on firm, level ground, with the jack assembly
pinned and foot lowered to firmly press into the ground.
ALWAYS adjust the GorillaBac Stabilizer Foot in combination with the log splitter support foot to
level, and provide firm downward pressure on both support foot stands.
ALWAYS attach the Stabilizer Foot Jack in the lower position and insert the Jack Pin into the Top Hole.

NEVER adjust the GorillaBac Support Jack so that the log splitter wheels lose contact with the ground.
NEVER operate GorillaBac without a plumb or near-plumb Winch Mast and level log splitter I-beam; if
the Winch Mast or splitter I-beam cannot achieve tolerance, reposition the splitter to level ground.

Page | 8 GorillaBac® Operator’s Manual (4/2018) • Part #100

PREPARATION OF LOGS
ALWAYS remove thick bark from the log before attaching the GorillaBac Grip; bark can prevent
secure penetration into the solid wood.
ALWAYS ensure both ends of the log are cut as square to help prevent the log from riding out of the
splitter during operation. Do not allow log to contact Gorillabac mast pinch point.

NEVER attempt to lift or position logs onto the splitter I-beam that are larger or heavier than you
could manage without GorillaBac. Working with logs beyond your physical limits could cause
serious injury.
NEVER use logs that are oddly-shaped or have knots that prevent them from sitting flush and secure
on the log splitter I-beam.
GorillaBac must ONLY be used for pulling and lifting separated firewood logs NO LARGER THAN the
following specifications:
• No more than 16 inches in length and 36 inches in diameter
• No more than 24 inches in length and 28 inches in diameter
• Weighing no more than 250 pounds;
• The maximum log size or weight specified for your log splitter (consult your log splitter owner’s
manual to verify log splitter log weight or size specification).

WINCH USAGE AND SAFETY

The winch is NOT designed for pulling or lifting people, or hoisting objects over people or objects.
The winch is ONLY designed for use with GorillaBac Model #3803 and in a manner consistent with
GorillaBac safety precautions, warnings and instructions related to assembly, set-up, maintenance
and operation.
The winch control box (Up and Down) buttons must always be quickly and firmly pushed, which
provides good useful life to the electrical contacts.
The free-spool clutch is operated by a pull and CLOCKWISE ¼ turn of the knob, which disengages the
gearbox and allows the wire cable to be pulled out without using electric power.
The electric winch is equipped with a permanent magnet motor, designed for intermittent use ONLY.
The duration of the pulling should be kept as short as possible. If the winch motor becomes hot to
the touch, stop the winch and let it cool down.
To respool correctly, it is necessary to keep a slight load on the cable. Do not allow the cable to slip
through your hand and do not approach the boom pulley too closely. When all the cable except a
few feet is in, stop and finish spooling in by rotating the drum by hand with the clutch disengaged.
Inspect wire rope and equipment frequently. A crimped or frayed wire cable with broken strands
should be replaced immediately. Use only GorillaBac approved switches and accessories. Use
heavy leather gloves when handling wire cable. Do not let wire cable slide through your hands.

Page | 9 GorillaBac® Operator’s Manual (4/2018) • Part #100

WINCH USAGE AND SAFETY (continued)
ALWAYS position yourself in the operating zone away from the log when using the winch to pull/lift.
ALWAYS keep bystanders a minimum of 15 feet away from GorillaBac lift, cable, or hook while in
operation.
ALWAYS keep clear of the winch, taut wire cable and hook when operating winch.
ALWAYS disengage winch clutch when pulling cable out. Powering out the cable can cause cable wrap
or equipment damage.
ALWAYS attach and use the cable safety strap to pull cable out or apply slight load while respooling.

NEVER release the free-spool clutch while winch or cable is under load.
NEVER put your finger through the hook; always use the cable safety strap when guiding the wire
cable in or out.
NEVER operate the winch with less than five (5) turns of wire cable around the winch drum.
NEVER work on or around the winch drum when winch is in operation.
NEVER step over or under a cable, or near a cable under load.
NEVER maintain power to the winch if the motor stalls, the GorillaBac Mast begins to tip, or the
Stabilizer Foot or splitter moves.
NEVER exceed 250-pound maximum rated capacity of your log splitter or Gorillabac system.
NEVER make modifications or alterations to the GorillaBac or winch, or use it for purposes other than
those described in this owner’s manual.

GENERAL LOG SPLITTER USAGE AND SAFETY

Refer to your log splitter owner’s manual for complete safety precautions.
KNOW how to stop the log splitter and disengage the controls before operating.
ALWAYS make sure you are familiar with the correct safety operating procedure of your log splitter.
ALWAYS position the log splitter on firm, level ground and make sure the I-beam is level.
ALWAYS block the wheels before use.
ALWAYS keep hands, clothing and hair away from moving parts.

NEVER reach across or straddle the I-beam of the log splitter while running or in use.
NEVER reach or bend over the log splitter or beam to pick up a log.
NEVER place hands or feet between the log, end plate, splitting wedge or GorillaBac Mast during
operation, as this could result in serious injury or death.
NEVER try to split two logs on top of each other, as this can create a pinch point or damage mast
NEVER use your foot, rope, or any extension device to operate the control lever; ONLY use your hand.
NEVER move the log splitter while the engine is running. Shut off the engine if you are leaving the log
splitter, even for a short period of time.

P a g e | 10 GorillaBac® Operator’s Manual (4/2018) • Part #100

PREPARATION OF GORILLABAC
ALWAYS ensure GorillaBac is properly assembled and positioned before use.
ALWAYS make sure GorillaBac and your log splitter are positioned on firm, level earth.
ALWAYS maintain GorillaBac with a plumb or near-plumb Mast position.
ALWAYS verify the Winch Control Cable is not wrapped around the mast more than one turn.
NEVER overload the equipment.
NEVER move or adjust the position of GorillaBac while in use.

USING THE GORILLABAC GRIP

ALWAYS remove thick bark from the log before attaching the GorillaBac Grip. Thick bark can prevent
secure penetration into the solid wood.
ALWAYS turn the GorillaBac Grip clockwise until the Screw Base is tight against the log before
attaching cable safety hook.
ALWAYS attach the GorillaBac Grip to the center-round side of the log to provide a level lift and
properly secure the log on the log splitter I-beam.

NEVER attach the GorillaBac Grip to the cut end of the wood.
NEVER strike GorillBac Grip screw against hard wood surface or other objects, to prevent damage
NEVER attach the GorillaBac Grip to wet, soft, punky or rotted wood; to prevent GorillaBac Grip from
slipping out of the log, ensure the wood is solid and tool is properly attached.

PULLING OPERATION WITH GORILLABAC

ALWAYS pull logs through an unobstructed path to prevent tipping, flip-over, or shift in GorillaBac
positioning. Stop, and reverse cable intake should movement or tipping occur.
ALWAYS perform pulling of the log using the Pulley Block Hook connected to the Pull Chain Loop. To
meet operating standards, avoid lift damage, and prevent splitter tip-over, the Pulley Block MUST
be utilized for retrieval of a log to prevent tipping or equipment damage.
ALWAYS pull logs to a position within a few feet to the GorillaBac Base before slacking off the cable
and disconnecting the Pulley Block hook from the Pull Chain.
NEVER pull a log that is frozen to the ground or wedged against or between objects.
NEVER pull or lift logs without positioning the GorillaBac Stabilizer Foot onto firm ground with a level
log splitter I-beam and plumb Winch Mast.
NEVER pull logs with GorillaBac Stabilizer Foot on cement, loose gravel, ice or unstable ground. To
prevent movement of the splitter, the Stabilizer Foot must press into firm ground.
NEVER pull logs without connecting the Pulley Block to the Pull Chain Loop.
NEVER position yourself between GorillaBac and a log being pulled; stand away from all moving
parts while in operation.

P a g e | 11 GorillaBac® Operator’s Manual (4/2018) • Part #100

LIFTING OPERATION WITH GORILLABAC
ALWAYS recheck that the GorillaBac Grip tool is securely fastened to the log before lifting begins.
ALWAYS maintain a safety zone, restricting bystanders and pets to a 15-foot radius around the
machine when lifting a log. Standing near or under a suspended log presents a crushing hazard.
ALWAYS perform the lifting of the log and positioning onto the splitter beam while you are positioned
on the opposite side of GorillaBac from the log, and at an arm’s length away.
ALWAYS use the Boom Control Arm when lifting, moving or positioning a suspended log onto the
splitter I-beam.
ALWAYS extend and maintain a firm grasp on the Boom Control Arm when lifting and moving a log
toward the splitter I-beam.
ALWAYS load log onto the splitter I-beam between the fixed endplate and the movable wedge,
with the square cut edge of the log against the endplate; this prevents the log from kicking
out and avoids a possible GorillaBac Mast pinch-point injury or equipment damage.
ALWAYS set the log securely on the splitter beam and power out the cable a few inches to
provide slack. A tight cable could cause damage to the equipment or cause the Gorilla Grip to
loosen while splitting.

NEVER begin the lifting procedure with the Pulley Block still attached to chain loop.
NEVER raise the Pulley Block or Winch Safety Hook into the GorillaBac Boom Pulley.
NEVER try to position a log over the log splitter by hand; use the Boom Control Arm to avoid injury.
MOVING AND TOWING GORILLABAC
ALWAYS remove the GorillaBac Winch Mast when transporting log splitter in the field or road.
ALWAYS raise the GorillaBac Stabilizer Foot Jack to the highest position, pull the Jack Pin and remove
Jack assembly and secure before transporting the log splitter.
ALWAYS insert the Jack Pin from the top when attaching Jack assembly to the base.

NEVER transport a log splitter on roadways with GorillaBac attached.

MAINTENANCE AND GENERAL REPAIRS
PERIODICALLY clean, inspect and apply grease or oil lubrication to bushings and pulleys.

ALWAYS examine GorillaBac and GorillaBac Grip before using for signs of worn, broken or bent parts.

NEVER operate GorillaBac with any broken, worn or bent parts, or parts that show signs of weakening
or are in poor mechanical condition or in need of repair.
NEVER alter your GorillaBac in any manner. Such alterations may cause the machine to be unsafe and
will void the warranty.
