Three challenges for designing distillation columns are: 1) weeping and flooding can occur if vapor and liquid flows are not balanced correctly through the plates, 2) modeling and simulation is needed to identify problems like weeping and flooding, and 3) distillation columns require a large amount of energy, so energy usage must be minimized.

In reality, the working of distillation column becomes complex in
meeting the requirements. Complex distillation can lead to a variety of problems such as; weeping occurs when the liquid flows down through the holes in the plate, caused by insufficient vapor flow. Flooding occurs when the liquid flows up through the plate, caused either by excessive vapour flow (entrainment flooding) or excessive liquid build-up on the stage (down comer flooding). Properly modeling and simulating a column should expose such problems. Distillation columns require a phenomenal amount of energy for their operation . Minimization of energy usage
