ABSTRACT
Although it is generally accepted that the maintenance of good health of the pregnant women
through the treatment of underlying maternal medical conditions is of potential benefit to the
unborn fetus, medication non-adherence is a commonly encountered problem in this population.
As in the non-pregnant patient the problem is complex with many factors playing a role;
however, additional issues such as the potential effects of the medication on the baby may affect
the mother’s decision-making process. Ideally, poor compliance with therapy can be avoided
through appropriate education of the mother although it is unlikely that this approach will be
effective in all cases and solve all problems. More research to provide the evidence-based
information regarding the effects of drugs during pregnancy, in order to avoid misperceptions, as
well as better knowledge translation is needed. Identification and evaluation of other effective
strategies to improve medication adherence in pregnant women who are already not taking their
medication will also be important. A cross-sectional study was used to assess the level of
knowledge of women in three health facilities in the Bamenda Health District where a structured
questionnaire was self-administered to 136 women attending ANC in the three health facilities in
the Bamenda Health District. Data was entered and analysed using SPSS version 16. Majority of
the participants 70(51.5%) had adequate knowledge with a p-value of 0.02 which is statistically
significant in relation to the level of education.
Out of 136 pregnant women who took part in the study, 72 (52.9%) do not adhere to their
medications due to forgetfulness and 30 (22.1%) do not adhere to medication prescription
because of the side effects drugs cause them. This is particularly for Fansidar (Sulphadoxine
Pyrimethamine) which 70 (51.4%) said it causes body weakness and sleeplessness.
The reasons why pregnant women don’t adhere to medications is because of forgetfulness,
skepticism on the effect on the unborn baby and side effect of the drugs on them. The same
research should be carried out on a larger sample size for effective generalization of results by
the ministry of Public Health.
Health care personnel should give proper education to women to be able to understand the reason
why are being given the medications.
