QUESTION 1
a) Describe what an ‘oxygen scanvenger’ is.
 Oxygen scavengers or oxygen absorbers are added to enclosed packaging to help
remove or decrease the level of oxygen in the package.They are used to help
maintain product safety and extend shelf life.It mainly used for food and
pharmaceutical applications.
b) Interpret why we might want ‘it’ in the packaging of our food.
 We might want ‘it’ in the packaging of our food because it helps retain fresh-
roasted flavour of coffee and nuts.
 Other than that,it inhibits oxidation and condensation of red pigment of most
berries and sauces.
 Oxygen scanvengers prevents changes in the colour of food,prevents oils in good
from becoming rancid and limits the growth of oxygen aerobic microorganisms
such as fungi.
 Besides that,it can increase the shelf life of a food product from days to
months,retaining flavours,aroma and food quality.
 Next,delays non-enzymatic browning of fruits and some vegetables.
 Prevents oxidation of vitamin A,C and E.
 Inhibits mold in natural cheeses and other fermented dairy products.

a) Explain the meaning of ‘oxidise’ ?
 The meaning of ‘oxidise’ is enter into combination with oxygen or become converted
into an oxide.
 The ‘oxidise’ is to react with oxygen and rust.
 Oxidise also means to cause an atom or group of atom lose electrons during a
chemical reaction.
b) Analyse why you think consumers do not like finding a sachet marked “Don’t Eat” in
their food.
 In my opinion,I think consumers do not like finding a sachet marked “Don’t Eat” in
their food might is they argue that it should not be eaten but still put in the package,in
fact it will affect children under 5 years old who can not understand the meaning of
the word sachet.In addition,this sachets can cause airways to open and can cause
irritation to the digestive tract,and dust from beads can irritation to the skin and eye,so
precautions should be taken.
