“If a general shows confidence in his men but always instincts on his orders being obeyed

the gain will be mutual” (Sun Tzu, n. d.). I would like to start with that prayer because for me it

is very important when a company decides to put all the trust in its workers, and we comp

employees, we are willing to offer our best service for them. As a manager you will also trust

your leader and employees and build a good team together. However, there’s situations that are

not easy to handle especially when that situation includes bankruptcy and a bunch of debt, until

the point where the owners are about to loose that business.

Being a manager in a company is difficult because you always have to make decisions

that can affect the future of the company, the future of workers and even our future. This was the

case this time in the car wash where I used to work. After a few long months where we had a lot

of work, many employees working for us, and many cars to wash, there came a time where the

work was low for the reason that it did not stop raining for a few weeks and that caused it to

come down the number of cars per week. That situation bothered a few workers and I suppose

that of other car wash workers too, since mobile car wash started coming out of many parts and

that also caused the work in the car wash to decrease.

The lack of cars for washing once the electricity, water and other bills, will win us

financially. I mean it was more what we had to pay in receipts and in employees than what the

car wash was receiving in profit. Another problem was when for those reasons that we were late

in the receipts, letters from the bank and the IRS began to arrive threatening the owners of the

company, telling them that they could get into legal problems if they did not solve that problem.

The owners of the car wash did not know what to do to improve that situation, since they

had never been through such an experience. That's when they organized a meeting between the

only managers in the company, I mean, and another partner. We started to create ideas on how to

improve but things did not go as we wanted. My partner wanted to let things happen, practically

leave things to fate and wait for the future. For my part, I offered to fire a few certain employees

and start creating internet pages and promote the car wash on the internet, even go out and create

brochures promoting the car wash. The situation became difficult when the other supervisor

found out about my decision, since some people I wanted to fire were friends and family of him.

I didn't want to fire those people for that reason, but because they were actually the ones who

worked the least and it was unfair to fire other people who were more hardworking than them.

“And this we may truly affirm to be a great proof that a man is just, not willingly or

because he thinks that justice is any good to him, but of necessity…” (Plato,2002, P.213). In my

point of view, as a dish, I like justice. and as you think dish, sometimes we have to be fair by

necessity. And in this occasion the need we had was to save the car wash from going bankrupt.

At the end of the day I think that my decision is the best since it includes the option to release a

little the expense of several employees and with that money we can do more. For example, to

begin with, we can keep up with the receipts we owe. Then we can invest a little money but a lot

of time in marketing for car wash. For example, we can go outside to promote packages that can

attract customers, we can offer discounts after certain amounts of car washes. But more

importantly, after firing those employees, and if our marketing idea works and we save the

business, we return the job as before, we can start hiring more employees again, but this time

make sure that the employees are good workers and try of not mixing feelings as the other

supervisor does.

Seeing the negative side of my ide, I will join the way of thinking of my other supervisor

but mainly that of Lao Tzu. Since their thinking is very similar. In this case, as I said before, I

feel that my idea would be very criticized by Lao Tzu since I am trying to interfere with destiny
Juan Garcia 4

and I am hindering what could happen in the future when trying to solve things my way. , “Do

you have the patient to wait ill your mud settles and the winter is clear? Can you remain

unmoving till the right action arises by itself? The Master doesn’t seek fulfillment. Not seeking,

not expecting, she is present, and can welcome all things.” (Tao Te Ching) That is why I believe

that Lao Tzu would strongly criticize my idea because I am not waiting in what is going to

happen.

“Practice not-doing and everything will fall into place.” (Teao Te Ching) in observing

that prayer, in my view leaving things to destiny is basically the same as trusting in God. Some

people believe in God and others do not, Some people prefer to do things on their own and not

believe that God can do everything, and other people believe that God can do everything. In this

case, I would criticize my decision in the way that I am not letting things go through the way

they are supposed to go. I am trying to solve something that according to Lao Tzu had to happen.

Firing people from the company would also be bad because trying to solve something that

destiny already has planned, would leave people without a job and even worse, I would leave

families with nothing to eat and without any economical support. To finish with Lao Tzu’s way

of thinking and by criticizing my own solutions, as I stated before I would agree with Lao Tzu

since he believes that not doing it is better that doing anything. He believes in feelings and he

believes in doing good to others. That means that the decisions the owners took before starting

the car wash were going to lead us the moment we are right now. So, because of destiny we are

where we need to be at the moment.

To conclude, every company has its ups and downs even when a leader has many good

qualities, however, as a leader you must make the best decision and sometimes the best decision

do not please everyone. That is why it is very important to always hire someone who is capable
Juan Garcia 5

and not afraid to take strong decisions because when the owner is not there and things get hard,

us as supervisors are the ones that are going to have to deal with that decision.
