Intermediate Line and improvements in km 25/900 - 33/8 of Thiruppuvanam

– Pulvaikarai - Narikudi road including reconstruction of culverts (M-718)
(Job code: 01-CRIDP-14-15-M-1107)”
AS Amount: Rs. .
TS Amount: Rs .

Name of Work:
Widening from Single Lane to Intermediate Line and improvements in km
25/900 - 33/8 of Thiruppuvanam – Pulvaikarai - Narikudi road including
reconstruction of culverts (M-718) (Job code: 01-CRIDP-14-15-M-1107)
Scheme & Authority :
Administrative sanction has been accorded for this work for Rs.529.00
Lakhs under “Comprehensive Road Infrastructure Development Programme”
(CRIDP) for the year 2014 - 2015 vide G.O.Ms.No. 108 / Highways and Minor Ports
(HF -2) Department, Dated: 12.09.2014.
Location & Classification:
Thiruppuvanam – Pulvaikarai - Narikudi road (M-718) is an important Major
District road in Virudhunagar district. The total length of the road is 33.80km (km
0/0 – 33/8). The stretch km 7/522 – 33/8 is being maintained by the
Virudhunagar (H), C&M, division. Out of this length, km 25/00 – 33/8 is taken up
for widening and improvements in this estimate. This road branching at km 305/6
of NH 49 and ends at km 92/0 of SH 42.
Important and Necessity:
Thiruppuvanam, Kariapatti and Narikudi are important marketing places
having more vegetable lands. Thiruchuli is an important place in which famous
Sivan kovil called as Boominathan temple is located, it is also one of the important
pilgrim center in Tamilnadu. Thiruchuli is the birth place of Sri Ramana Maharishi.
This road connects many villages.
Need for Widening:
Present traffic volume is 5561 PCU. The traffic capacity of existing single
lane is 2000 PCU. The existing single lane is not sufficient to cater the present
traffic volume of 5561 PCU. Hence it is proposed to widen the above road from SL
to IL. The traffic capacity of proposed IL is 6000 PCU

Need for Improvements

The riding surface of the road is badly damaged causing inconvenience to
the road users. Further, the riding surface is 5 years old with lot of pot holes and
patches. The riding surface has to be improved to ensure safe and smooth riding of
the vehicles.
Existing condition:-
The existing road is having single lane with 3.75m and the soil is clayee in nature.
The centre portion in km 27/900-30/2 and 32/8-33-8 is badly damaged with lot of
sunken portion which causes hindrance to vehicular traffic movement which is
beyond the scope of normal maintenance.

Design for widening / Strengthening by CBR method

The flexible pavement is designed as three layer system as per IRC 37-2012.
The bituminous layer is assumed to have 30 mm thick BC and 65 mm thick DBM
with VG30 bitumen. The granular layer is assumed to have 250 mm thick WMM
and 300 mm thick GSB. The assumed section is checked for the limiting horizontal tensile at the
bottom of the bituminous layer and vertical compressive strain at the top of the subgrade.

Fatigue criteria
The limiting horizontal tensile strain in the bottom of the bituminous layer is
calculated for the design traffic (Nf) for 90% reliability equation in case of design
traffic more than 30msa, otherwise, calculated for 80% reliability equation

Rutting Criteria
The limiting vertical compressive strain at the top of the sub grade is
calculated for the design traffic (Nr) for 90% reliability equation in case of design
traffic more than 30msa, otherwise, calculated for 80% reliability equation.
The limiting horizontal tensile strain at the bottom of the bituminous layer
and the vertical compressive strain at the top of the subgrade are checked with the
allowable strains for the standard axial load using IITPAVE for safety and economy.
