Module 6 Assignment:
Career Plan Template
Section 1: Creating your BHAG

Following the information in the “Good to Great Connections” PowerPoint presentation and all
of the additional information provided under the Module 4 content area, and taking your Personal
Mission Statement development efforts into consideration, carefully develop your own personal
long term BHAG (***one amazingly HUGE, your world changing goal***). The timeframe for
your BHAG is 10-25 years out, however it will depend upon your age. For example, a 55 year
old person might be closer to the 10 year BHAG, whereas a 30 year old or younger person
should be considering a BHAG 25 years out. This BHAG may be related to your overall life/
lifestyle aspirations, or it could be related to some organizational, protean, or entrepreneurial
vision you have for the future. Dig deep and and go beyond the job. That is up to you. What it
needs to be is BIG! HUGE! REALLY HAIRY! STRETCH YOURSELF! LOOK BEYOND
GRADUATE DEGREE! LOOK BEYOND A JOB! HOW WILL YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE
IN THIS WORLD???? I RECOMMEND WE MEET TO DISCUSS IT TO ENSURE ITS
HUGENESS.

Answer the following:

1) What is your BHAG (***one amazingly HUGE, your world changing goal***)?

My BHAG is to open up my own business and utilize the skills I’ve learned from school
and experiences from work, to successfully run an organization.

2) Why is this your BHAG?

This is my BHAG because I’ve always wanted to open up my own business, but didn’t
think it was possible when I first starting working. I’ve worked as a sales associate at a
clothing store, a nursing assistant at a retirement communities, and a barista at Starbucks.
It wasn’t until I reached a management position as a Shift Supervisor that encouraged me
to use the skills I’ve learned as a leader to a possible idea of having my own business in
the future. I have still a lot to learn and years of experiences I need to practice, in order
to achieve this BHAG.

3) How does your BHAG align with your vision statement from Module 4?

My personal vision statement from Module 4 was is “to be a provider for my family and
a leader to my team. Learn from my mistakes and continually improve to be a better version
of myself”. This aligns with my BHAG because having my own business means leading my
team into success. Being in charge of an organization could lead financial success that would
allow me to be a provider for my family. More importantly, it’ll give me the experience to
keep learning and improve on the skills over the years.

4) How does your BHAG align with your mission statement from Module 4?

My mission statement from Model 4 states that “I am dedicated to constantly strive to be

the best version of myself and inspire others with my actions. I will live life with
integrity and confidence, in order to pursue a life-long of growth and achievement”. This
aligns with my BHAG because I am constantly looking to improve my skills and keep
growing as a person to achieve my goals. I want to be honest during this process and
make an impact on my peers by motivating them to reach their own goals.

5) List your top five (5) obstacles in order from number 5 being least difficult and
number 1 being most difficult you need to overcome in order to obtain your BHAG
and explain the relevance of each one.

Obstacle 1: Money - Owning a business requires you to have some money to pay for
permits, location, etc. I believe this is the biggest obstacle I need to overcome in order to
obtain my BHAG. I would have to save a lot to be able to open my own business. This
is going to be difficult especially when I have a family I need to support and bills I have
to pay. I would be having my own children in a few years and I would want to invest in
their future and save up for them. I can see this being an obstacle of saving up to open
my own business. Family is important to me so it will difficult trying to find a balance
for both.

Obstacle 2: Time - I believe that time is another obstacle I need to overcome in order to
obtain my BHAG. With everything that is going on with the pandemic and personal life,
I wouldn’t know when it would be the right time to open my own business. Right now, I
feel like I have still a lot to learn after graduation before I do try to achieve this goal. A
few years from now, it might not be the right time because I would be having my own
children I need to take care of. Time definitely plays a big part in achieving my BHAG
and it’s important to recognize this obstacle early on.

C2
!
Obstacle 3: Family - This is an important obstacle that I need to overcome in order to
obtain my BHAG. I can see this be in the way of reaching my BHAG because of how
much I would be spending time with them. Owning a business could take up a lot of my
time and I would have to decide whether it would be worth not seeing my family at times
or missing out on a few of their celebrations.

Obstacle 4: Risk - I believe that with every goal, there is always a risk. This is an
important obstacle that I need to overcome in order to obtain my BHAG. There’s always
a risk of me failing and having to give up my business if doesn’t work out. With an
unexpected pandemic, we are unsure of how long it will last and there’s a risk of not
being able to start up a business because of this.

Obstacle 5: Current Job - This is the least obstacle that I need to overcome in order to
obtain my BHAG. Before reaching my BHAG, I know I would be working some other
job. If I really enjoy being in that job, it would be difficult for me to leave to start my
own business. Additionally, if job security is great with my current job, it’ll be difficult
for me to resign especially when I know I’m fully able to support my family.

Section 2: Career Vision

Consider your long-term vision for your career. Respond to the following questions, and make
connections to your personal mission statement, your BHAG(s), the themes you developed in
Module 4, and the textbook/supplemental readings (as applicable).

Answer the following:

1) Analyze the type of career you want to have, in terms of an organizational career or
a protean career, make sure it is clear you understand the concepts as outlined in the
textbook. Why?

After graduation, I am hoping to get a job in the Human Resource field and work my way
up as a Human Resource Manager. I believe that this job lands in a traditional career, but
still have a little bit of protean. The organization is in charge, but as a manager, I would
be a leader for other specialists. In the HR field, there’s a chance for everyone to have
growth and have a little bit more freedom when it comes to completing tasks. When it
comes to the success criteria, a HR manager position would include a salary, but would
still have a psychological success. Additionally, a Human Resource Manager would be in
an organizational commitment, but it could still have a professional commitment and
work satisfaction especially when it is something that I would enjoy doing.

2) Analyze your career with an explanation as one that moves you up the organization
or one you develop seeking alternative career paths. If you see yourself taking an
alternative career path, which one(s) sound the most likely? Why?

I believe that in the Human Resource field, it would give me an opportunity to move up
the organization towards being a HR manager. There’s a lot of opportunities to learn
about the job and how to improve my skills. I could see myself taking an alternative
career path if it does’t work out, but I believe on working hard and to learn whatever it
takes to reach my goal as a Human Resource Manager.

3) Discuss and explain if you see yourself working an alternative or flexible work
schedule/arrangement? If so, which ones and why?

I could see myself working a flexible work schedule. I don’t mind working weekdays
and having the weekends off, but I also don’t mind working during the weekends if I
need to. I’ve worked in jobs where I would have to work holidays and weekends, so I am
used to working when I need to help the team out.

4) Research and post current, or past, job postings from your local area, across the
country, or from around the world which illustrate how you might reach your
BHAG. Be sure to provide the Job Title, a small description and why it supports
your BHAG when you provide the URL. Websites such as CareerBuilder, Monster,
or Indeed might be a good place to begin. Also, career-specific websites such as
SHRM.org or AICPA.org often have job postings. Provide 2 listings for each of the
following time periods:

Section 3: Long-Term Strategy

Develop a strategy for moving toward your ideal future work/life situation and the realization of
your BHAG(s). Consider the timeframe for your BHAG(s). Provide a vivid description of life
“the way it will be” once your BHAG is realized.

1) Critically think about and then list out (not a narrative format) the interim steps or
milestones you have laid out for yourself that will aid you in reaching your BHAG
(you should have at least 10 to earn a rating of excellent and be referenced by time)

1. 1 - Research jobs in the Human Resource field around the area

1. 2 - Apply to HR related jobs

1. 3 - Once hired, stay in jobs for a few years to learn skills and experience

1. 4 - Work my way up in the Human Resource field to save up money and gain the
knowledge I need to start my own business

1. 5 - Research the requirements needed to start online business

1. 6 - Start looking into licensing and permits for business

1. 7 - Work on logos and website to start business

1. 8 - Advertise the business

1. 9 - Work on product and services I’ll be offering

1. 10- Maintain and improve all aspects of business to further success

2) In addition to career-related roles, consider your other life roles in relation to your
career goals. Revisit your responses to the Identities Exercise that you completed in
Module 1 of the course. Based on your long-term strategy what are the 3 most
precious things you are willing to sacrifice, besides time, to achieve your BHAG?
Why?

Sacrifice 1: Hobbies - I would be willing to sacrifice my hobbies for the time being in
order to achieve my BHAG. I want to be able to focus on the steps I need to take to reach
my BHAG and have a balance with spending time with family. So I would be willing to
set my hobbies aside for awhile until I am able to find time to get back to it.

C8
!
Sacrifice 2: Vacations - I would be willing to sacrifice vacations and trips that I would
normally take with my family. One of my obstacles for reaching my BHAG was money,
so sacrificing vacations with my family would allow me to use that money to save up for
my goal. For the first few years I know that it will be a sacrifice that I have to take, the
process takes time, and if I am patient it’ll be worth it. Later down the road, when my
BHAG is achieved and it is successful, I would be able to take as much vacations I want
and enjoy it with family.

Sacrifice 3: Holidays/Celebrations with family - I would be willing to sacrifice some

holidays and celebrations with family. I know that my BHAG is a goal that would help
my family and myself in the end. I would have to pick and choose which holidays or
celebrations I might have to sit out on and figure out which ones I want to be there for, in
order to achieve my BHAG.

C9
!
Section 4: The one to two year plan

Using a SMART goals-based approach, as well as project planning and management skill best
practices, create a detailed project plan for at least two specific goals. At least one must be
related to your long-term BHAG. The other may be related to some other aspect of your career
development or career-life integration. Both of these goals need to be things that you are
passionate about accomplishing.

Your selected goals and SMART plan (see SMART goal information provided in the module)
should be structured based on a one to two-year timeline. It should include specific milestones,
action items, sub-tasks as well as task-related interdependencies as applicable. With respect to
each goal, critically think about what specifically are the things you will do in the next one to
two years to achieve these goals.

Develop a clear and detailed SMART plan, with facilitating goals and steps/actions required
to accomplish your selected goals. It should be evident, by looking at the format and structure
of your plan, that you have developed some significant skills respect to project management.
Include Gantt charts (T) or other visual project representations as you see fit, and be sure to
address your approach to tracking/measuring your progress (M).

1) What is your #1 Goal? (at least one of the following must be related to your BHAG)

Goal 1: Obtain a career in the Human Resource Field

a. Specific- I will apply to jobs related to Human Resource.

b. Measurable- I would set a date on when I should have this completed so that I am
making sure I am motivated to achieve this goal.

c. Attainable- This goal is possible because I invested in school to learn the skills I
need to reach the requirements to acquire this goal.

d. Relevant- This goal matters to me because it will be a stepping stone to my career

and the skills I need to learn to achieve my BHAG.

e. Time-Based- Within a year after graduation.

C10
!
2) What is your #2 Goal? (at least one of these must be related to your BHAG)

Goal 2: Start my own business online

a. S - I will do my research on permits or license I need to start my own business.

b. M - I will set goals and timelines on when I need to finish each step.

c. A- This goal is possible because by the time I am ready to start my own business,
I would be financially ready and generally ready from the skills I have learned
over the years.

d. R - This goal matters to me because it shows that I am ready to be my own boss

and it will be a trust test to all the things I’ve learned from school and my
experiences from all the jobs I’ve had.

e. T - Within 10 years after graduation
