Density Simulation Density

Definition:  mass per unit volume.

How to find density of an object...

Mass:
Use a top­pan balance or electronic scale...

Volume of Solid:

Make measurements using a ruler to find the dimensions and 
use the corresponding equations to find the volume. 

How do we improve the accuracy of the measurement?

1. Line up the end of object to the ZERO mark

2. Read the ruler straight down to avoid parallax

Example:

If an unknown material box has a mass of 20.0 kg and 
dimensions of 3 x 4 x 5 cm. Determine the density of the box. Will 
the box float or sink?

Note the density of water is 1000kg/m3.

Volume for Irregular solids...

Record the initial volume reading of 
the measuring cylinder.

Carefully place the object into the 
measuring cylinder.
Record the final volume reading of 
the measuring cylinder. 
Take the difference of the readings 
to achieve the volume of the object.

* Remember to take the reading at the meniscus at eye level and that the 
measuring cylinder is on a flat surface.

Irregular solids...

To measure irregular solids we need a special technique...
Displacement Technique!

Drop object using a string 
into displacement can.

The overflow will be 
collected in the small 
beaker. This will tell us the 
volume of the object.

Why did diet cokes float better than the original??
* Density!

Original: Original has 35g of sugar in the form of high 
fructose corn syrup. 

Diet: Diet cokes contains Aspartame which is 130 times 
sweeter than HFCS. Therefore will require less amount 
of Aspartame to sweeten the drink.

­ in short less mass with same volume = lower density.
