HAZARD
• “a phenomenon or situation, which has the
potential to cause the disruption or damage to
people, their property, their services, and their
environment”

Modes of a HAZARD
 DORMANT or POTENTIAL
- theoretical risk of harm
- Situation environment is currently affected
 ACTIVE
- Creates an emergency
- Incident- hazardous situation that has come to pass
- Hazard and possibility interact together to create risk
 ARMED
- People, property, or environment are in potential harm’s way.

General Classification of Hazards
1. Natural Hazards – arise from purely natural processes.

2. Quisi-natural hazards such as smog or desertification

that arise through the interaction of natural processes and
human activities.

3. Technological(or human-made) hazards such as the

toxicity of pesticides to agricultural lands, accidental leaks
of chemicals from laboratories or radiation from nuclear
plant. These arise directly as result of human activities

Types of HAZARDS
 Hewitt and Burton (1971) provided a typology of hazards as follows.

1. ATMOSPHERIC
(Single element) Combined element/ events
• excess rainfall • Hurricanes
• Freezing rain • ‘Glaze’ storm
• Hail • Thunderstorms
• Heavy snow falls • Blizzards
• High wind speeds • Tornadoes
• Extreme temperature • Heat/ Cold Stress

2. HYDROLOGICAL
• Floods- river and coastal area
• Wave action
• Drought
• Rapid glacier advance

Impact of Various Hazards on
Different Exposed Elements
 Impact of various hazards may vary in severity & how long they last
(International center for Integrated Mountain Development, ICIMOD)

 A more economically developed country can prepare for and predict

hazards more effectively and they have more resources to support a
faster recovery (wealth & development)

 Resilience is also needed. People who experienced hardship can often

recover more quickly from hazards(in developing countries)

 Not easy to classify as short term or long term because it varies for each
individual event.

Different Exposed Elements
Physical Impact
• Death of people
• Destruction and loss of vital infrastructure like transport
system, roads, bridges, power lines, and communication
lines
• Widespread loss of housing
