Observe the elements in ASEAN HOMESTAY STANDARD ASSESSMENT CRITERIA below.

ANALYSIS

Instruction: Answer briefly with not less than 75 words.

What do you think is the importance of weighing in “Marketing and Promotion” to the ASEAN
HOMESTAY STANDARD ASSESSMENT CRITERIA?
It is essential that a homestay has a concept to generate earnings through the services they
offered. To achieve this goal. A host may find a strategy on how can be connect to the valuable
customer. He could attract the target customers through promoting the services and amenities they
could lend. The most basic way to market their homestay accommodation is with the use of
technology. They may create website for their homestay or continuously promote it within their place/
region. In addition, marketing and promotion is important to ensure you are building a good
accommodation services and rendering your time for your customer. You are not only giving them a
fiends and sharing the practices and cultures that you have. Basically, you are promoting your own
life, your culture, your practices and you are aiming that through what you shared, you can make
impacts to their lives. That’s the true essence of promoting and marketing.

Instruction: Write your answer in PARAGRAPH FORM with words not less than 150 in count.

From a Tourism Management practitioner standpoint, what do you think are the advantages and
disadvantages of having accreditation standards for homestay facilities?

Accreditation standards for homestay facilities have a good and bad effect. The
advantage of it is, the homestay organization have the idea on what should the proper amenities that a
homestay should have. It can serve as their basics to create a better and spacious for the customers.
Having a fully equip homestay facilities, you can ensure that you are satisfying the basic needs that a
tourist looking for. You can guarantee that. They are staying in a safety and healthy environment.
Apart from that, have accreditation standards for homestay facilities secure the host family and protect
the customers to any unpleasant scenario may happen. It is better that a homestay facilities giving
them an assurance that will happen to them.
On the other hand, the disadvantage of accreditation standards for homestay facilities limits
the ability of the homeowner to invest money for the development of the facilities. Since, there is set
of standards needed to follow, the homeowner will be forced to renovate other parts of the house to be
able to qualify on the accreditation standards, aside from that it may hard for the host to return his
investment in a couple of months/years. The problem is the financial capacity of a homeowner to
build a standard homestay for the tourist.

ASSESSMENT
Essay
Instruction: Answer in writing with not less than 250 words.
The existence of Homestay is relevant to places that has the absence of actual accommodation
facilities—which also, without a doubt, generate economic benefits and drives in tourist traffic to the
local community. Given this, should the entry of Resorts and Hotels to a village that has a thriving
Homestay industry be encouraged? Yes or No? And why?

The type of accommodation would vary on the place and the environment. For the
question above, I don’t think so that homestay is needed when there is resorts accommodation
and hotel nearby. It would be irrelevant for building a homestay near in the hotel or either in the
resort. How about the accommodation facilities that a resort could offer when there is a
homestay? I also don’t think so that it is good for the economic status of the hotel.

Homestay is much relevant to a places were there’s is no other means of

accommodation facilities. The local tourist would enjoy their stay in the host family and able to
enjoy his vacation together with them. Unlike the resorts and hotel, they offer respective
accommodation it is quite enough for a tourist to stay in that place and wander around the area
by himself or friends. It is in urbanized community where mostly a hotel could be found. It is not
hard for a tourist to ram around the area, relax himself to the resort/hotel activates and tourist
could prefer to stay in a hotel that a homestay prefer to stay in a hotel that a homestay. Base on
the services, we can say that they can offer different from each other. But the question is? When
are in the city what accommodation services would you like to take, is it in homestay or in hotel?
For those tourist who wants to invest his money for the luxury facilities. Then an hotel could offer
that even a tourist is not rich, he budgets his financial asset, he still like to stay in a hotel and
experience its services. The services and facilities of the accommodations is far different from
each other.

In my opinion, it is not wise for a homestay to compete to the resorts and hotel services.
Each of the have respective place where they can generate more income and attracts more
tourist. As for enterprise, analyze the status of your business and wisely choose a good place to
venture.

LESSON 7: INTERPRETATION

ACTIVITY

According to The Homestay Index by Homestay.com (http://homestay-

public.s3.amazonaws.com/en/homestay_index.pdf), the motivators behind the travellers’ continued
patronage to homestays are:
1. Holiday
2. Education
3. Business and Internship
4. Events

ANALYSIS
Why do you think the abovementioned categories of travellers choose to be in Homestays than in
other accommodation places? Answer in not less than 75 words.

Travellers motivated to stay in the homestay because it is a holiday, they want to treat
themselves and enjoy their holyday in a place away from stress. A travellers seek for a nice
destination and hoping to create a memorable experience on his stay. Apart from the
accommodation, the traveller finds an interesting activates within the village. However, education
could also be another factor why a tourist stays in a homestay. He/she wants to experience and
know the life of the people living on that area. The culture practices that those people have that
may help for educational purpose.

APPLICATION

After learning what interpretation is all about, it is needless to say that the human skill in
interpretation plays a vital role in the successful knowledge-transfer of a specific tourism site. As a
future tourism management practitioner, what do you think is the main human/personnel attribute that
has to be honed for remarkable interpretation? Answer in not less than 200 words.
Interpreting an idea is a crucial thought to do. Why? Because you should interpret it factually
and truly. The context should be there and you need to give a factual statement to others. As future
tourism management practitioner, it is one of our job to interpret the idea and spread it to others. But
what should the attributes we may grind to create a remarkable interpretation?
As a tourism management practitioner, I should have the attribute to understand the
information, for me to interpret it clearly and able to relay it to the tourist. With humor for the tourist
to enjoy your interpretation sometimes, a tourist cannot fully get the idea or the context of what you
are saying but they can understand it by seeing a picture. As a tourism management practitioner, you
need to be creative in telling the story to attract and get the attention of the tourist. You should have
the ability to use your emotion to interpret the story to have a remarkable interpretation.

ASSESSMENT

Below is an example of a simple information turned into interpretation you can use as your
guide in making your own interpretation:
Example Fact:

Paoay Church is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Example Interpretation:
Paoay Church was founded by Augustinian missionaries in 1593, and was a labor of
love over time and in the face of earthquakes and other disasters.
The Paoay Church history began in the 17th century. The construction of the church
was spread over a century beginning from 1604: the cornerstone of the church was laid in
1704; the convent in 1707; and the belltower in 1793. Even while still unfinished, Paoay
Church was already used by parishioners. In 1896, it was finally inaugurated. But in 1706 and
1927, it was damaged by earthquakes.
Its scars made it more beautiful and worth-visiting. Because of San Agustin Church
Paoay’s historical and artistic significance, it was designated as a National Cultural Treasure
by the Philippine government in 1973 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site among the
country’s baroque churches in 1993.
Seeing it in person, you’d think it’s like straight out from a postcard. The sky above
the church is often a deep cerulean making it a photographer’s haven.
Paoay Church in Ilocos Norte, overall, is an interesting design. It is adorned with
eight pilasters and 24 extravagant coral-block buttresses and ornate stone finials that hold it
up and protect it against earthquake damage.
The bell tower was intended to be constructed at a distance from the church to
minimize damage should it fall.
According to historians, the bell tower served as a status symbol for the locals—the
bell would ring more loudly and more times during the wedding of a prominent clan than it
would during the wedding of the less privileged. It was also said to have been used as a
Filipino watchtower during the 1898 uprising against the Spaniards.
In 1993, Paoay Church Ilocos Norte was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage
Site as one of the best examples of the Baroque Churches of the Philippines. The historical
church is famous for its distinct architecture highlighted by the enormous buttresses.
Portions of the church were damaged by two major earthquakes. In 1973, it was
designated as a National Cultural Treasure by the Philippine government. During an
excavation inside the church in 2000, a prehistoric human skeleton and fragmented ceramics
were discovered and are now on display at the National Museum. (Fernando, 2020)

Above is the example of what is expected from you, below is the assessment proper.
Instruction: Using the example interpretation of Paoay Church above as your guide, turn the
following information into interpretation. Word count requirement is 300 words and above.
