SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN

BASIC SENTENCE PATTERNS

I. OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:

a. Identify the Basic Sentence Patterns to rearrange the given sentence

b. Distinguish the basic parts of speech and sentences

c. Construct meaningful sentences in written and verbal using the Basic

Sentence Patterns

III. PROCEDURE

A. REVIEW

Questions to ask for the students to recall the lesson:

a. What is a sentence?

b. What makes up a sentence?

c. What are the basic parts of speech and their definition?

d. What are the basic parts of sentences?

e. What are the functions of each part?

B. MOTIVATION

Present sentences to the students and have them identify the basic parts

of speech and sentence.

Sentence 1: I slept.

Sentence 2: My sister sent a letter.

Sentence 3: The bird flew across the ocean.

Sentence 4: She went to the grocery to buy pickles.

Sentence 5: He is pretty.
C. ACTIVITY

Introduce the game “SPEAK NOW” to examine their knowledge about the

previous topic. Provide standards for the activity and give the following

mechanics:

a. Group the class into two.

b. Each group will pick their Speaker. Speakers will differ in each round.

All students must participate.

c. Each Speaker will come up with a sentence for ten seconds abiding

with the theme “Daily Life” then utter it for each other. After a Speaker

utters a sentence twice, the other speaker will have to identify the

parts of the sentence and say it out loud.

d. Speakers will take turns until all students from each group are done.

e. The teacher will be the one to tell whether the answers are correct or

incorrect at the end of the activity. The group who has the most

correct answers win.

D. ANALYSIS

Ask the following questions:

d. Do you know what is a pattern? How would you describe it?

e. What are the patterns that you remember from the speakers?

f. Did you realize patterns’ existence in sentences? When and how?


E. ABSTRACTION

a. Proceed to the next lesson which is “Basic Sentence Patterns”

b. Discuss the Five Basic Sentence Patterns and other elements such as

Direct and Indirect Object, Transitive and Intransitive Verb, Linking

verbs, and Subject and Object Complement

c. Give examples of each patterns

d. State the importance of knowing the basic patterns of sentences in

listening, reading, writing, and speaking

e. Short activity: State sentences and ask the students to select the

sentences’ elements and the pattern

f. Recapitulation of the Topic

g. Ask if the students have more inquiries about the topic.

F. APPLICATION

The students will be grouped by 5s. Each group will have to select a

movie or a book the members agreed to discuss on. After the allotted

time, each group will report the discussion they had to the class using the

Basic Sentence Patterns. The discussion must provide the following:

a. Book/Movie Summary

b. Lessons learned from the book/movie

c. Review of the book/movie


IV. ASSESSMENT

The students will be provided with printed handouts for assessment. The

handouts will contain the following instructions:

a. Re-arrange the following sentences into the given type of sentence

pattern

b. Name which parts of speech corresponds to the underlined words

c. Name which parts of sentences corresponds to the underlined words

d. Create a short monologue of your daily life using Basic Sentence

Patterns

V. ASSIGNMENT

Watch the movie “The King’s Speech” (2010) and create a reflection

paper. Use basic sentence patterns.
