QUALLITY SLEEP AND BEHAVIOR OF SCHOOL AGE CHILDREN 2

Introduction

Quality sleep and behavior is governed by the sleep awake cycle. Sleep is so important

when it comes to restoration of the human biochemical and physiological process. Therefore, it is

important for every human being to experience enough sleep for him or her to function normally.

There are many health risks associated with in adequate sleep. Sleep helps the

biochemical and physiological process of human being to be restored for proper functioning of

the body systems. However, the duration and quality of sleep reduces as the child approaches the

school age. Here the wake-up time reduces and the sleep durations falls below the recommended

sleep duration. However, the quality of sleep and behavior of school age children varies between

children in urban areas and those in rural settings. For example, those in urban settings after the

school activities start watching televisions which may not be the case with those in rural setting

where televisions are more abundant like in urban areas.

Quality sleep by definition refers to the correct integration of sleep inhiation aspects,

sleep quality, maintenance of sleep, and refreshing upon being awake. In general, quality sleep

signifies the satisfactory enjoyment of the sleep.

School age children in the urban areas do not have the privilege of quality sleep since

they always wake up very early to go to school. Sleep much time doing their home works, do not

go to bed at the right time.

The purpose of the study

The study is aimed at assessing the problems and the need for quality sleep and behavior

of the school age children in urban areas.

Methodologies used in the study

The study used the qualitative research approach. This research approach involved the

use of document review. Articles published by different scholars on quality sleep and behavior of

school age children in urban areas. Other methods used in the study include: structured

questionnaires, structured interviews to clear obtain the data from the parents of the school age

children in the urban areas in comparison with those in the rural areas.

Procedures of application of the methods

For the participants to be enrolled in the study first underwent the screening interview for

their eligibility to be determined. Only the parents with the school age children were allowed to

participate in the study.

The collection of data.

The sleep habit questionnaire was submitted to the parents who passed the screening

phase to record the child’s sleep quality and behaviors for the most recent typical days or weeks.

Many articles have been written on quality sleep and behavior of the school age children.

For example, the article by James C. Spilsbury, PhD; Amy Storfer laser, MS; Dennis Drotar et.al

2004. (sleep behavior in an Urban US Sample of School aged Children).

The search was done with the main purpose of describing sleep behavior of elementary

school going children and also assessing the variation by ethnicity, age and sex.

The methods used to collect and analyze the data was the use of cross-sectional analysis.

The results obtained. It was discovered the quantity of sleep or the duration of sleep is

inversely proportional to the age. In that the hours of sleep reduces with the increase in the age.

The next article is the “sleep problem in urban, Majority, Early school aged children

prevalent than previously recognized” by Beverley J. Sheares et.al. 2013.

The main purpose of this article was to characterize the sleep problems in children of

school age (5 to 6 years).

The method used in this search was the cross-sectional study design. Search design used

the sleep habit questionnaires to collect data from 160 parents about their children.

The results obtained in this search were: 94% (150) scored less than 41 which was a clear

indication of the sleep problem. The most identified sleep problems in among the children in this

search were: daytime sleeping (47%), bedtime resistance (51%), among other sleep problems.

The implication of these results is that, sleep problems among the children of school age

are more associated in urban areas than in rural areas.

The consequence of the results in this search brought to the Healthcare provider’s

awareness of the under reported sleep problems.

Article 3: “sleep duration, schedule and quality among urban Chinese children and

Adolescents associations with routine after school activities” published by Xiaoxiao Jiang et.al.

2015.

The main purpose of this search was to determine the duration of sleep among the urban

children and the Adolescents.

parents about the sleep behaviors of their children, the duration at which the children goes to bed.

Results of this search

In this search it was discovered that, there is no much difference in sleep duration

between the urban children and the Adolescents in China.

School going children devote little time for sleep and most of them are affected by

daytime sleeping, parasomnia and very any kinds of sleep problems.

Article 4: “sleep habits among school children and their effects on sleep pattern” by

Apurva Mishra et.al. 2017.

age children on their sleep patterns and duration.

(children) under the government school. The children selected for inclusion in this search fell

under three groups of 4-5 years, 11-15 years, and 6-10 years.

The data was collected using the self-administered questionnaire about habit,

demographical data, and sleep problems.

QUALLITY SLEEP AND BEHAVIOR OF SCHOOL AGE CHILDREN 6

The results of the study were: 1.1 hours during the weekends and 1.2 hours during

weekdays. There was a delay in wakeup time in all groups of children during the weekend

periods. Furthermore, sleep time in all groups of children increased during the weekends.

The implication of the results in the search is that, children receive little time of sleep

during the weekdays which is even lower than the recommended time sleep duration.
